New York City is home to over 8.3 million people and has more than 50 million tourists a year. Of the five boroughs in NY, Manhattan is the smallest, but it's the most densely populated.

It commemorates how the Native Americans (Indians) helped the first English settlers in Massachusetts survive their first difficult year in the New World. They gave them food and showed them what vegetables to plant. The English settlers celebrated their first harvest by inviting the Indians to a big diinner to thank them for their help.
Nowadays, American families still celebrate this holiday on the fourth Thursday of November as a day to give thanks for all the good things they have by getting together and having a big turkey dinner. The turkey is a Native American bird and became the main dish for any special meal in the USA.
The Statue of Liberty
The Statue of Liberty is on an island in New York Harbor called Liberty Island. The statue was a gift from the French government in 1876 to commemorate the 100th anniversary of the founding of the USA. As well, it was designed by a French sculptor called Frédéric -Auguste Bartholdi and the interior structure was designed by Gustave Eiffel.
It is a small island in New York Harbor close to Liberty Island where the majority of immigrants who came to the United States between 1892 and 1954 were processed. A young girl was the first immigrant to step on Ellis Island, so that officials gave her a gold coin to mark the occasion. Now, it has been converted into a museum which opened in 1990.
The Empire State Building
It was the tallest skyscraper for forty years. Today is the second one because of the One World Trade Center. It was built in only 16 months.
The original World Trade Center in New Yorkn was actually a complex of seven buildings including the Twin Towers and was built along the Hudson River in Lower Manhattan. After their completion in 1973, they were the tallest buildings in the world until the Sears Tower was completed in Chicago, in May 1973. Unfortunately, Twin Towers were destroyed on 11th September, 2001.
Chinatown is situated in Manhattan. There are shops and restaurants everywhere. Souvenirs, imitation designer clothes, watches and bags are sold there. It is one of the biggest Chinese neighbourhoods in the USA and the biggest concentration of Chinese people in the western world. There are between 90,000 and 100,000 people. It is the oldest of all the Chinatown neighbourhoods in the New York area.
It is an area full of Italian restaurants, cafés and food shops. In September the San Gennaro festival takes place. San Gennaro is the patron saint of this neighbourhood and it's quite a party. There is even a procession through the streets with the bust of the saint.
Madison Square Garden
Madison Square Garden is the home to the New York Knicks. It is situated in Manhattan.
New York has two different basketball teams: New York Knicks and the Brooklyn Nets.
New Year's Eve
New Year's Eve is a major social holiday for many people in the United States. Many people hold parties at home or attend special celebrations to celebrate the upcoming New Year. In many cities, large scale public events are held. These often attract thousands of people. particularly striking aspect of the New Year's Eve festivities is the ball drop in Times Square in Manhattan, New York City.
It is an famous area where people spend New Year's Eve. The ball is made of crystal and electric lights and is placed on top of a pole, which is 77 feet, or 23 meters, high. At one minute before midnight on December 31, the ball is lowered slowly down the pole. It comes to rest at the bottom of the pole at exactly midnight. The event is shown on television across the United States and around the world. The event has been held every year since 1907, except during World War II.
Broadway is an avenue and one of the most famous streets in Manhattan. It goes across Times Square. It is composed by nearly forty theaters. The majority of plays performed are operas and musicals.
Central Park is an urban park situated in Manhattan, which has quadrate shape. It was designed by two men called Calvert Vaux and Frederick Law Olmsted. This is one of the first man-made nature parks. More than four million trees and plants were planted here and lakes were also built. It took 20 years to finish the park.
The Dakota building is a historic apartment bulding where John Lennon lived for more than ten years. It became famous because John Lennon was fatally shot right there at its main entrance.
Strawberry Fields is a garden which is named after the famous Beatles song that John Lennon composed. Shortly after his death, the city dedicated this garden to him because he liked spending time here. Countries from all over the world have donated trees or plants for this special ‘Imagine’, the title of Lennon’s most famous song.
The Yankee Stadium, situated in the Bronx, is the home to the New York Yankees. They are a professional baseball team from NY. They have been champions- or World Series champions, as they say there- 27 times. A lot of the greatest players in baseball history have been on this team and are now part of the national folklore. One of them is Joe DiMaggio, who was married to the famous film star for a few years, Marilyn Monroe.
Bryant Park is a park located behind the main New York City public library on 42nd Street and 5th Avenue. On weekdays during the summer, the city organises small concerts at lunchtime for the people who work in the area. A lot of people sit in front of a small stage to listen to classical music.
Coney Island is on the far side of Brooklyn. It was a popular vacation place for rich people during the second half of the 19th century. It’s also got the oldest amusement park in the USA. Nowadays it is a recreational place for people of all cases.
The hot dog was invented by a man named Charles Feltman in 1867. One day, the bar owners asked him for hot sandwiches. He got the idea of putting a German sausage into a piece of bread. That’s how the hot dog was born. It was so popular that Feltman became a rich man.
