Dr. David Lyness is the faculty chair for Social Media at #IFAD2018. He is an Anaesthetist and Critical Care Doctor in Belfast, Northern Ireland. David is the founder of Propofology.com which publishes resources in anaesthesia and critical care, as well as running video courses in anaesthesia and critical care on Vimeo and YouTube that are used around the world. His major academic interests include medical education and social media, as well as pragmatic trial summaries in critical care. David is on the faculty for IFAD and the European Society of Intensive Care Medicine as well as being a clinical tutor and examiner for Queen’s University, Belfast.
Adrian is a consultant in critical care medicine and anaesthesia in King’s College Hospital, London. He has interest in point-of-care ultrasound, clinical governance and medical education. He is an editor on The Bottom Line website and is a member of the ESICM Clinical Training Committee. In his free time, he enjoys building Lego and playing Destiny 2.
Segun is a Specialty Trainee in Intensive Care Medicine in London, UK. He has a long standing interest in Social Media as a tool for medical education, and is fortunate enough to contribute to the Intensive Care Society, the European Society in Intensive Care Medicine, the Intensive Care Network, Life in the Fast Lane, and The Bottom Line.In between clinical work, critical care ultrasound, and social media, he likes to help his wife run MonAnnie- a cake and confectionery business. He does this mainly by making the leftovers “disappear”.
Catherine Beni is a general surgery resident at the University of Washington in Seattle, USA. Prior to starting medical school, she received her PhD in applied and computational mathematics from the California Institute of Technology (Caltech), where she worked on medical applications. She is recognized as the youngest person to receive a PhD from Caltech, at age 20. Her main fields of interest are resuscitation after trauma, postoperative resuscitation, hemodynamic monitoring in critical care, and judicious fluid management. She is passionate about FOAMed -- being a frequent user when running between OR cases -- and hopes to make it a cornerstone of surgical education.
Velia, passionate about extracorporeal life support has completed training as ECMO specialist, Cardiovascular Perfusionist and Cardiovascular Sonographer, and is actually working as Critical Care Nurse in ICU/organ procurement team in Parma & lecturer at the University of Modena and Reggio Emilia in Italy. She’s Social Media Editor for ELSO and in ASAIO Journal Social Media Council and runs an ECLS educational blog on EuroELSO website.
Jonathan is an Advanced Critical Care Practitioner At Warwick Hospital in the UK. He is a nurse by background and has worked in critical care for 20 years. He has a blog at www.criticalcarepractitioner.co.uk from where he also hosts his podcast “Critical Care Practitioner” which is now approaching 100 episodes. With a combination of podcasting,
live streaming and tweeting he has helped the Social Media teams at the Critical Care Symposium, the British Association of Critical Care Nurses conference and the Intensive
Care Society State of the Art conference. He has also been asked to do the same at the
Association of Chartered Physiotherapists in Respiratory Care conference in Birmingham in 2019 and the American Association of Critical Care Nurses conference in Orlando.
Jamie Strachan is an intensive care medicine and anaesthetic speciality trainee in Oxford, United Kingdom. He has a keen interest in innovation and technology in healthcare and spent 2 years as a technology strategy fellow where he worked on building a new life long learning platform that launched in August this year. He promotes networking and engagement in intensive care and medicine via social media for the Intensive Care Society and for the European Society of Intensive Care Medicine. He was chair of the Intensive Care Society Trainee Committee and sat on the ICS council until this year; he now represents anaesthetists in training as an elected member of the council of the Royal College of Anaesthetists
Jonny is a Consultant in Intensive care medicine and Anaesthesia in Northampton, UK. He is the founder of www.criticalcarenorthampton.com and is a firm supporter of FOAMed and Social Media in Medicine. His interests lie within point of care ultrasound and in particular, the use of handheld devices in the assessment of the critically ill patient. He is a course director for Advanced Trauma Life support and NICE IV fluid lead for his trust, promoting safe fluid prescription and education on fluid physiology. He is a member of the committee for core ultrasound in intensive care at the Royal College of Anaesthetists, a member of iFAD Faculty and enjoys speaking / teaching on all that is ultrasound!
Cian works as a Consultant in Emergency Medicine in the Mater University Hospital in Dublin, Ireland. Following several years in Melbourne he returned to Ireland in search of better weather. He is the social media editor of the International Journal of Emergency Medicine and surfs the POCUS literature as part of the lifeinthefastlane review team. Cian shares a home with @shirleypotty, 2 cats and his road bikes
Ross is Consultant Paediatric Surgeon at Sheffield Children’s Hospital, Sheffield, UK. He is lead surgeon for Oncology and Trauma. He is Chairman of TARNlet, the national paediatric trauma database. Manu Malbrain qualified as MD from the Catholic University of Leuven, Belgium in 1991. He is the Director of the Intensive Care Department at the University Hospital in Brussels (UZB), Belgium and Professor at the Faculty of Medicine and Pharmacology at VUB. He is actively involved in the ESICM and he is member of the Scientific Subcommittee of the European Society of Anesthesiology (ESA). He studied the effects of raised intra-abdominal pressure (IAP) in general ICU patients for the last 20 years. He is the founding President and Treasurer of the Abdominal Compartment Society. He is co-founder of the International Fluid Academy (www.fluidacademy.org) and co-chaired the first 6 iFAD meetings since 2011. He is author and co-author of more than 300 peer-reviewed articles, reviews, editorials, book chapters and even two complete books on ACS.

Renske is a MD/PhD Candidate in Critical Care in Groningen, the Netherlands. She is a coordinator for the Simple Intensive Care Studies (SICS, thesics.com) and coordinates SICS-II, which focuses on structured research into repeated critical care ultrasonography. Moreover, Renske tries to encourage teamwork and free open access sharing of research protocols to improve research in the field of ultrasonography in Critical Care. During ESICM LIVES 2018 she and the team became active on social media. Besides PhD life and clinical work, she likes to organize events for fellow young researchers and is currently working on the International PhD Day event 2019 in Groningen.
DR. RENSKE WIERSEMA @r_wiersema
Marije van der Velde is a consultant in acute internal medicine, working in the Amphia Hospital. She has a Master's degree in epidemiology and a PhD in Nephrology, with her PhD thesis titled 'Renal risk markers and patient prognosis in chronic kidney disease'. She has a specific interest in hemodynamics and elektrolyte disturbances in acutely ill patients. She is a member of the Guideline Committee on 'Acute hypertensive Crisis' and she is a member of the research workgroup of the European Task Force on Geriatric Emergency Medicine (EUGMS/EUSEM). She believes that Social Media use and FOAMed should be integrated into medical training, to enhance and accelerate discussion on new scientific findings and insights and their implications for daily clinical practice.
