Lean in Daily Work: A Visual Framework for Continuous Improvement
Krista Schulte, Lean Performance Consultant,
University of Michigan
This presentation will introduce
participants to a visual management
system, called Lean in Daily Work, used
at the University of Michigan to develop
and engage problem solvers at every
level of the organization. The Lean in
Daily Work method relies on 5 key
elements that work together to help a
team both manage and improve their
work:
key measures a visual board Huddles
Leadership walks “Everyday Lean Ideas.”
The session will help participants understand how the Lean in Daily Work system is taught in a series of intervals over 4 months, how in-class training is balanced with individualized coaching, and how participants learn to quantify the value of each “Everyday Lean Idea.” Finally, we will touch on the overall impact these teams are making with Lean in Daily Work. This session will expose conference participants to a strategy for engaging staff in Lean thinking that is very different from the more common Rapid Improvement Event approach. It is especially useful when you have few expert Lean resources available and are trying to reach a large number of staff.
