At the beginning of each new school year, staff at Cusack Elementary re-examines their work on being culturally responsive by first examining the different ways in which they develop relationships with their students. One way they do this relationship building is through the use of restorative circles in the classrooms. They begin their meetings in a circle as a way to check-in with staff. This year, they used the Sankofa as part of the Talking Circle. Principal, Amber Orychock, used the Sankofa as her talking piece after their discussion about it's significance and how it relates to the work they are doing towards creating a Culturally Responsive School. The picture to the left was taken during one of their staff Talking Circles.
Sankofa Bird
The Sankofa is a metaphorical symbol used by the Akan people of Ghana, generally depicted as a bird with its head turned backward taking an egg from its back. It expresses the importance of reaching back to knowledge gained in the past and bringing it into the present in order to make positive progress.
