Copper Sulfate is a blue crystalline inorganic compound. It is used as a fungicide, herbicide and pesticide and is commonly found in hardware stores. Copper sulfate is toxic but crystallizes fairly quickly. If one makes a seed crystal first, one can easily make a gem from copper sulfate.
Epsom salt, also known as epsomite or magnesium sulfate is a mineral that absorbs water very quickly. Because of this, it crystallizes within a few hours and it makes needle like crystals. Epsom salt was first found in Epsom, Surrey, England and typically grows on cavern or mine walls.
Borax is a boron compound that is used to make fiber glass, enamel glass, cosmetics and detergent. Borax was originally discovered in Tibet at the bottom of dry lakes. Today, borax is cheap and available at most grocery stores. Borax crystallizes very quickly when put into boiling water.
Thank you to Mr. Diveki for helping me throughout the whole process.I really enjoyed growing these crystals!
