For centuries, mystical creatures of all description were gathered to a hidden refuge called Fablehaven to prevent their extinction. The sanctuary survives today as one of the last strongholds of true magic in a cynical world. Enchanting? Absolutely! Exciting? You bet. Safe? Well, actually, quite the opposite . . .Kendra and her brother Seth have no idea that their grandfather is the current caretaker of Fablehaven. Inside the gated woods, ancient laws give relative order among greedy trolls, mischevious satyrs, plotting witches, spiteful imps, and jealous fairies. However, when the rules get broken, an arcane evil is unleashed, forcing Kendra and Seth to face the greatest challenge of their lives. To save her family, Fablehaven, and perhaps the world, Kendra must find the courage to do what she fears most.

So, if you are not all that into the whole fancy summary spiel there, here's a little summary of a summary for you:
Two young siblings named Kendra and Seth Sorenson stay at their grandparents house while their family goes on a vacation. They soon find that their grandparents are the caretakers of the last "mystical creature" refuge named, Fablehaven. And of course, how things work in these kinds of stories, Fablehaven begins to "lose its touch" and the magical monsters have potential of destroying Kendra and Seth's family, along with the entire world.

15 years old. Older sibling to seth. Responsible and analytical.
11 years old. Not too wise, but has a big imagination. Very curious and extremely protective of Kendra
Pretty old. Typical wise old man of any story. Keeper of Fablehaven and a bit mysterious.
Kendra and Seth Sorenson are sent to their grandparents' while their parents are on vacation. Little did they know, their Grandparents were keepers of a mythical creature and monster refuge, which is kept concealed from the outside world by 5 different artifacts with ancient laws imprinted on them. These artifacts must stay at their sanctuary in order to keep Fablehaven civil and concealed. An evil disrupts the sanctuaries and may give these monsters an opportunity to escape to the outside world, and likely destroy it. With their grandfather missing, Kendra and Seth must enter the danger of the woods, exploring and finding out what evil disrupted the sanctuary. and how will they ever restore the ancient laws. Hint: 5 books, 5 artifacts, I wonder...
Entering the unknown and feared is necessary to succeed
This theme makes sense to me because Kendra and Seth were terrified of what dangers Fablehaven had in store for them. But in order to save the entire world, they had to enter the dark depths of Fablehaven and overcome all of their fears of what was waiting inside. This theme is not just for Fablehaven, because that's not what the assignment was... This theme can apply to almost anyone if you desire to grow as a person. You will get nowhere if you keep repeating the same routines or if you just never go out and explore what life has to offer you. Whether it's asking out that cute girl you have in 6th period, applying to a top tier college, or interviewing for a job. You will not succeed if you don't enter the unknown.
