Bio harvesting of traditional Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander plants
nby lily cairns
Early medicine was originated from aboriginal and Torres strait islanders ability to use plants as medicine. Due to technology scientist we able to develope powerful drugs made from native plants.
Two traditional plants and there medicinal uses
Tea tree oil is a natural antiseptic and esstential oil and has beed used for over 70 years. tea tree oil was commonly used by the Bundjalung people of east Australia as a traditonal medicine. To extract the oil the Bundjalung people would crush the leaves from the tree and use the oil in a variety of ways. The oil was inhaled to treat coughs and colds, the leaves were crushed into a paste and placed on wounds and bites. The leaves were also brewed into a tea to help with sore throats.
Eucalyptus oil has antiseptic qualities which are very effective in treating cuts and sores. Eucalyptus can also be used to relieve pain in muscles teeth and joints. Like tea tree oil eucalyptus oil is extracted by crushing the leaves and releasing the oil.
New drug treatments from medicinal plants
Technology has a had a major effect in the discovery of potential new drug treatments, for example the national cooperative drug discovery discovered many tropical plants with potential anti cancer properties which could lead to new drugs for cancer treatments. This shows that with further research technology and development that medical plants could be used to stop harmful targets like cancer aids and Alzheimer.T
Turmeric is native to south Asia is used in many foods. Turmeric contains cur cumin, a chemical which is know to have many health benefits and can potentially prevent heart disease and cancer. Turmeric can be used for mnay medicinal purposes including arthritis heartburn headaches and cancer. people also apply turmeric to skin for swelling pian and skin conditions.
Scientist should always consider the Aboriginal and Torres strait island people when bio harvesting native plants, as these plants could be grown on native land that is sacred or has signinficsnat meaning or is the property of Aboriginal and Torres strait lander people.
A big ethical problem when bio harvesting is that native Australian plants can be slow to grow and can be found in remote locations. if not treated correctly these plants could die of along with the medicinal properties it contained this is why scientist need to respect all native autralian plants when bio harvesting.
Technology and the advancement of medicinal plants.
Technology has helped scientist around the world become more advanced at using plants for medicinal purposes.
Many drugs have been developed from compounds found in plants, technology like phenotype screening has helped in the of discovery of new drugs.
For or Against
I believe that scientist should be able to bio harvest native Australian plants to be able to develop new drugs and treatments for dangerous diseases like cancer. However this should be done in a ethical way in order to respect all aboriginal and Torres strait islander people. the indigenous peole should get recognition for any drug that are developed using a native plant.
