Class of 2018
Our semi-annual reunion dinner
gatherings with our youngest Old
Boys continue to deliver
mentorship and support to our
graduates as they navigate the
transition from their SHS years to
high school; they also provide
SHS with vital academic and character development data that we use for curriculum planning. Members of the Classes of 2017and 2018 enjoyed their respective opportunities to mingle, share and enjoy good eats and fun in the Eaton Shier Gymnasium.

Bi-weekly Tuesdays, February - June, 2019
6:30 - 8:30
Every other Tuesday, February - June, 2019, alumni 18 years + gathered for a semi-competitive night of basketball. It was a successful initiative that will pick back up again in September. Look for posts on Old Boys Facebook or Instagram or email [email protected] if interested.
Most of us grew up playing together in this gym, whether that was during lunch breaks, practices or CISAA games. We have shared a lot of happy memories playing basketball together, and I believe that’s what helps bring so many alumni back. It’s a feel good night.
- Michael Diplock 2006
Our Old Boys are showing up because of the connection they felt and still feel towards SHS, because of the relationships they built here. Sterling Hall has been a special place for them; they remember their time in these hallways and on this basketball court with fondness.

Next Steps is an annual springtime event designed for our Old Boys in high school and facilitated by our alumni in university. There are open, small-group discussions about university applications, housing, campus life, career paths, programs/majors, co-ops, study abroad, sports scholarships, gap years and more. Career interests are identified and there is ample opportunity for good questions, sage advice and a better understanding about the year that lies ahead for these Grade 10 and 11 students. It's networking at its finest.
Pizza + Wings Night

May 14, 2019
Over 120 Old Boys, alumni dads, faculty and former faculty once again gathered to celebrate our alumni community. This event for Old Boys of all ages continues to draw crowds and create memories, and gets better each year. With energized conversation, fun and complimentary beverages and appetizers, the night remains a highlight of our event calendar.
10-Year Reunion

Pour House

June 18, 2019
Drew Findlay-Black 2009 and Saunder Waterman 2009 started planning early to ensure their class’s 10-year reunion was a success. With over 25 classmates and faculty in attendance, the June 18 gathering on the rooftop deck at Pour House was all that and more. It was clear that the chance to reconnect with each other and to reminisce about days gone by built even stronger bonds; old friends and former teachers enjoyed the nostalgic opportunities to share memories and current life stories.

We are grateful for these fine Old Boys who serve our alumni community so readily, skillfully and kindly. The SHS Old Boys Ambassador Program is an exciting mentoring initiative for our alumni as they enter high school, currently being piloted and meeting with success. Our Old Boys entering grade nine will have the opportunity to be mentored by another SHS alumnus who is well into his high school experience at the same institution.

I started my work as the new Alumni Intern on June 24. So far, my experience has been nothing but positive. I would be lying if I said that being an employee instead of a student at Sterling isn't a little strange at first, but being invited into the Shark Lounge for my daily (or hourly) coffees and lunch breaks is something I got used to quickly. The SHS faculty and staff have been overwhelmingly welcoming, easing me into my new position. I have already been involved in a variety of projects that have pushed me to learn and develop new skills – from graphic design, to event planning, to learning how to utilize large databases and perform data analysis. I would recommend this position to any Old Boy who is committed to improving the SHS community and wants to have a productive and profitable summer job. It is a worthwhile experience and will make for a summer well-spent.

What schools did you attend after SHS?
I attended Forest Hill Collegiate and Western University. I graduated from Western in 2018 with an Honours degree in Business Management Organizational Studies with a Specialization in Finance and Administration.
What is your current occupation?
I currently work for North American Development Group, a real
estate developer, in the acquisition department. However, in the
winter I am a member of the Canadian National Alpine Snowboard Team. This will be my second year on the team.
What do you consider your greatest accomplishments?
My greatest accomplishment would be being named to the Canadian Team while successfully completing my undergraduate degree at Western. Most athletes in Alpine snowboarding are committed full time which always made competing against them extremely challenging and frustrating. I had to manage my academic work load with training on the weekends and races throughout the year. I would often miss midterms and have to write re-weighted final exams worth 70% +. On top of this I managed to finish my undergrad with honours in four years!
I am currently a candidate for my real estate license. I have completed Phases 1 & 2 and will be completing the remaining courses through the rest of the year. In August I will be attending a snowboarding training camp in Chile for two weeks.
Which characteristics and attributes has SHS helped you develop?
SHS gave me the foundation to begin my athletic career. The determination and “grit” that were learned in Temagami, as well as the monthly mile run have helped me a lot. I would also say compassion for others and sportsmanship were learned at SHS.
What advice would you give to current SHS students or younger Old Boys?
Work ethic, determination and “grit” are the key to success in the future. You can achieve whatever you want if you put in the hours. Also, do not be afraid
to go off the standard path and do things differently.
Everyone has their own journey!
Describe a favourite memory at SHS.
A favourite memory was when I won my
debate in Grade 8 English class. Public speaking is not
one of my strongest skills which always made
presenting in front of the class a nightmare. So, the
moment I was able to convince my fellow classmates
that my argument was stronger was one I will never forget.
Do you have any side projects? Not just in your field, but in your life?
How did you end up teaching at Sterling Hall – when did you start? What is your favourite part of your job?
I started at Sterling Hall as a supply teacher in 2002, met this great community and signed a full-time contract at the end of my time teaching the Class of 2006 when they were in Grade 5 that year. That fall, 2003, I began working in JK with Ms. Dale, and I haven’t looked back since!I love my job, every part of it. I love to be able to make a difference and help the boys learn what they are capable of - help them dive a little deeper into their thinking and learning to approach ideas and problems from different directions and with a variety of perspectives.
What is most important to you these days?
Most important are my dear family, my friends and the
opportunity to give back and to make a difference in others’
lives. I love making decorated cakes for family - I take
delight in watching my grandchildren's faces when they see their cakes!
Which characteristics and attributes has SHS helped you develop?
I have been able to develop my compassion and patience over my years at SHS. I relish the ability to develop my love of learning through my interactions with students and my peers. I have also been able to further my learning by completing a number of AQ courses, most recently in guidance. I have developed my leadership skills as I really enjoy working with teams of both students and teachers. I have developed my curiosity, fairness and humility.
Describe a favourite memory at SHS.
There are too many to count! One is our first SHS trip to Ecuador with an outstanding group of eight students who stepped outside their comfort zone to make a difference for a community 5,000 miles away. Another is the many times I have been able to
serve as a Grade 8 mentor. The lunches and chats
about the future, school choices and
their interests have always been favourite times of
my week. Mentorship friendships continue past their
time at SHS, and it’s rewarding to stay in touch after
life in our hallways.

How did you become interested in teaching and what interests you most about it?
I have always loved working with children. I was a camp counselor, lifeguard and busy babysitter when I was younger. As I was growing up, I noticed that my younger brother struggled in school. No matter how hard he tried, it continued to be hard work for him. As I watched his challenges in a time when students were not given individualized programming, I felt I wanted to try to make a difference for students by addressing their needs.I love teaching because it is ever-evolving. Each of us is always learning; it is fascinating to observe the constant changes ahead for both teachers and students.
Tell us about your non-teaching projects – passions or interests in your life.
I love working with the Citizenship Team, the Agents of Change and coming up with ideas for ways to give back to our community. I also value serving as a Grade 8 mentor. Both of these are opportunities to support and connect with students. I enjoy entertaining family and traveling. Having lived in England, visiting friends, family and exploring the history is a passion. Everywhere you turn, there is something to learn. Spending
time with my three children and soon to be five
grandchildren is really important to me. One of my family’s
favourites is watching sports - the Green Bay Packers and
the Toronto Maple Leafs. We even named our
Newfoundland dogs after the Packers - Lambeau and Bart!
Look beyond yourselves. There is so much that this world has to offer and so many experiences. Embrace it all. One never knows when the next opportunity will pop up which will change your perspective or your life!
What advice would you give to our SHS Old Boys as they journey through their lives?

Reasons to Give
Lucas Verde, 2011
“It felt great to donate to SHS. Although it wasn’t a large amount, it meant a lot to me to be able to support a place that was so instrumental in my development as an individual. Coming back to visit Sterling Hall, walking through the beautiful new wing and hearing about the school’s future plans was evidence that these donations can have a significant impact on the quality of education for future students.”
