a literary technique where two or more ideas, places, characters, and their actions are placed side by side in a narrative or a poem, in order to develop comparison and contrasts.

Catharsis:
The purging of emotions. It is an emotional discharge through which one can achieve a state of renewal or achieve a state of liberation from anxiety or stress (character of reader.)
Examples In Chronicle of a Death Foretold:
"Then she wrote him a feverish letter, twenty pages long, in which without shame she let out the bitter truths that she had carried rotting in her heart ever since that fated night. she spoke to him of the eternal scars he had left on her body...."(Marquez, 94)
"Everything continued smelling of Santiago Nasar that day...'No matter how much I scrubbed with soap and rags, I couldn't get rid of the smell...' they'd gone three nights without sleep, but they couldn't rest because as soon as they began to fall asleep they would commit the crime all over again."
Examples of Catharsis In Real Life:
When a relationship ends, one or both of the individuals might choose to cleanse the other out of his/her lives by throwing away shared objects.
When a significant life stage is over, such as college, there is a ceremony that encourages strong emotions to be released.
