The Right Track
of MENTORS thought their Mentees would describe them as Effective.
of MENTEES said they would describe their Mentors as Effective
Some Mentees described their Mentor as a very "nice person" but not someone who provides them with feedback or constructive criticism.
The majority of Mentees appreciate that their Mentors are available, helpful, and encouraging, and don't micro-manage them.
Some Mentees were disappointed that they didn't get as much time with their Mentor as they had hoped.
Some Mentees were looking for more than "check-ins" with their Mentor and wanted them to be more involved.
Encouragement to grow
of MENTORS believe they are effective at helping their Mentees set goals, make decisions and trust themselves.
of MENTEES said their mentor encourages them to set goals, make informed decisions and trust their own knowledge.
Some Mentees commented that their Mentor encourages them to revisit their goals and set new ones when appropriate.
Not as much of a gap in perceptions between Mentors and Mentees in this area.
The majority of Mentees said their Mentors are very good at helping them set goals and complete their Quarterly Learning Focus.
Good Listening skills
of MENTORS believe they listen more than give advice.
of MENTEES said their mentor listens more than they give advice.
Actively Listening is one of the most important skills a Mentor can employ!
It's important to let new teachers "get there" without providing constant advice or solving problems for them!
Folks are on the same page here and the listening skills are pretty solid!
quarterly learning focus
of MENTORS believe the Learning Focus is effective in documenting a Mentee's current understanding of the Iowa Teaching Standards.
of MENTEES believe the Learning Focus is effective at documenting their understanding of the standards.
Several Year 1 teachers seem to have a disconnect to the understanding that the state of Iowa requires teachers to document their understanding and demonstration of the ITS.
Next Fall, it will be important to emphasize this is a necessary piece of the Induction process and not just busy work.
Mentors and Year 2 teachers rated the Learning Focus document higher overall as they had something to compare it to. (In the past "Learning Projects" were used that were much lengthier.)
of MENTORS believe the Communication Log is an effective way to document conversations and hold both parties accountable.
of MENTEES believe the Communication Log is effective.
Several new teachers mentioned they don't see the Log because their Mentor "takes care of it".
Several new teachers saw it as "busy work". We need to emphasize the accountability piece for all.
Mentors noted that the Log helps them stay focused on keeping conversations more learning-focused instead of a quick "check-in".
Michelle and Sara need to emphasize that this Log should be completed TOGETHER during the 5 expected conversations each quarter.
of MENTORS believe the Quarterly meetings are effective and promote collaboration.
of MENTEES believe they are effective and promote collaboration.
Some said it wasn't possible for them to participate "live" and the recording was not as engaging.
Mentors and Mentees believe the Protected Time they are given to attend the meetings either in person or via Zoom is very beneficial.
One obstacle to overcome is to try and make the meetings more interactive and not as much of a "webinar". Michelle and Sara will look for more ways to make the time as collaborative as possible.
New teacher resources
of MENTORS think their Mentees are benefiting from the Tools for Classroom Instruction book and the Tips for New Teachers book.
of MENTEES believe the resources are beneficial.
Michelle and Sara have begun looking for other resources to have on hand for those who aren't traditional classroom teachers.
Teachers who are assigned to a subject area or grade level classroom found the resources to be very helpful.
Art, PE, and Preschool teachers along with one School Counselor in the program did not feel the resources applied to their particular area.
of MENTORS believe the facilitators for The Right Track are knowledgeable, flexible, engaging, organized and responsive to questions.
of MENTEES agree!
We will continue looking for ways to improve the program and build on the strengths within it!
Michelle and Sara are very pleased with these numbers!!!
We appreciate everyone's willingness to dive into this new program with us!
