As neo exits the virtual stimulation in to the real world he finds himself in an enclosed sap with wires attached all over his frame.
The close up directs the audience's eyes to Neo's bare body.He is almost like a blank canvas in which others paint on. There is a lack of division and individuality. Hence there is an absence of choice and control.
Wires are a universally recognised objects. They, in the real world, are utilised to transfer energy and information. This connotation literates the fact that information has been feed into Neo and has not been sourced by himself, as humans usually would.
Neo is taken out of the stimulation zone.
The lights act as vectors and directs the audience to the salient image which is Neo's ascending figure.
Contrast of light and dark. There is complete darkness in the room while a saturated bright light is being exposed outside, representing hope. The contrast as well as the low camera shot as Neo moves toward the light heightens Neo's liberation from the matrix to something close to freedom.
Morpheus explains what the matrix is.
As Morpheus introduces Neo to the construct room, there is an instantaneous transition form a dramatic, high volumed non- diegetic sound to no background noise. The silence emphasises the emptiness of the human psyche which has been manifested by the matrix. The pure white setting implies the same. Morheous states that these vacant spaces are filled by visual simulation that seem like reality. Hence there is no human development, jurisdiction or choice.
Full shot heightens the desolation of the setting
Extreme close up and foreground placement of the battery draws attention to it and makes it the most salient image and influences the audience to analyse and think about it deeply.
The placement of morpheus's blurred face in the background indicates that a flesh's worth has been diminished and the evolution of robots and there need for energy has objectified humans and curtailed human's worth.
Morpheus tells Neo that humans are being turned into batteries. They are being objectified. And since batteries are utilised for energy and power, correlation of humans with batteries indicate that humans have been utilised for a set purpose too. This contradicts the whole definition of a human in which their ambitions are meant to be boundless. A fixation of one's life by an outer force indicates the lose of authority of oneself.
Neo Vs Morpheus
Im in control
I think I am in control but I am not.
- Looking down shows that he has doubts and is unsure,
- Body language; slouched, curved, caved in which shows lack of power
- face down completely, palm wide open is a sign of weakness and surrender
- high angle shot: portrays him as weak and incomparable to Morpheus.
- Body language: tall, firm which shows that he is confident and fearless.
- facial expression: calm, conscious and without doubt or fear.
- Low angle shot embraces his superiority.
"How did I beat you?",questions Morpheus
"your too fast", replies Neo
Neo confesses that his incapbilitiy to beat Morpheus is due to him lacking in the same physical abilities as Morpheus. However Morpheus explains that his ability has nothing to do with his physicality but instead the way he thinks. Thus Neo's fear, doubt and lack of assurance can be linked to his inabilities to master the mind and influence it.
Over the shoulder shot and the placement of Morpheus in the mid ground portrays Morpheus as almost trapped by agent smith in front and the wall behind him.
Morpheus at the beginning was tall, firm and confident which indicates his stability and control over himself and his situation. However when he is being interrogated by agent Smith his body language is slouched and enclosed. His costuming is also very dull & creased compare d to the clean, crease free suit worn at the beginning of the movie. These changes imply that he no longer is his usual self and he is unable to be due to a power beyond him.
The wires attached to him is a symbol of imprisonmnet. It highlights Morpheus's inabilities to do as he pleases. The wires create a barrier to his desires.
The low angle shot highlights the lack of power he has.
Neo goes to rescue Morpheus as he finally believes in himself. His first test is defeating the security crew.
As he moves across the hall each pillar breaks down and he proceeds forward. The pillars symbolise boundaries and barriers of his mind that he slowly overcomes and defeats. He gains authority of himself and his mind which allows him to cross the security hallway breaking through all his doubts and fear.
As Neo doges the bullet his actions are displayed in slow motion and the the movement of each bullet is evident as it mises Neo.
Also, this scene only contains diegetic sounds, the noise of the bullet and the movement of Neo are the only sounds displayed.
These two film techniques have been utilised to magnify the height of Neo's concentration to avoid the bullets. Nothing else is evident to him in that moment in time. He is fully aware of the situation and of every bullet that comes his way. Thus it is evident that his mind and himself are fully knowlegble of the situation and are in control of it.
Trinity advices Neo to run when agent smith approaches. The over the shoulder shot and the selective focus of the stairs allows the audience to see neo's cognitive thoughts. The stairs are connotative of journey and escape hence when the focus is on it, it is implied that Neo is thinking of running away from Smith. However the focus quickly changes as he turns around. The stairs are blurred and his ambitious, fearless face is focused in the foreground. He decides to face Smith instead. This indicates his change in thought and his ability to manunre his mindset.
The first hurdle was choosing an appropriate medium to present my information . After searching I came across Visme which seemed like an interesting and new way of presenting the information creatively . Visme has some inbuilt images and shapes that i was able to use, to clearly expose my analysis, however there were some limiting factors to Visme. I wanted to incorporate many video scenes however visme does not allow you to to upload your download videos. Videos can only be linked form youtube. And since there are limited avalaibity of scenes on youtube I was unable to incorporate some of the scenes that i wanted to .
But mostly my encounter with this new presentation site was positive , it was easy to use and I was able to manipulate the slides in the manner that I wanted to .
The analysis part was tedious but through many pauses and rewindes I managed to obtain my screenshots, techniques and develop an analysis for each scene. After gathering the information I gathered images that would be appropriate for the presentation. Then I pieced the slides together. I arranged the slides in order of the scenes that took place in the movie. Each image that is not part of the scene correlates with the ideas of that scene.
The hands in the title page is used to portray the desires that humans have for control. (reaching out for control) The lines on the right hand side embody the complexities of the concept of control. On slide 1 the word reality on the title has a different font indicating the confusion of reality in the movie. Slide 3 contains a doll house which shows how the matrix shapes humans lives just like how a child shapes a toys life. Side 4 contains a closed eye which symbolises how the humans in the matrix are living blind. Slide
Slide 6 contains an image of a lady opening a door which links to what Morpheus said about opening ones mind and how its a personal action. The opening of the caged brain on slide 8 embraces Neo's change as he widenes his perceptions and believe.
. I incorporated such metaphorical images to further enhance the understanding of such scenes. I incoperared familiar daily life images that would link to the scene. One of the hardest things I found about the presentation was structuring my analysis on a presentation. I decided to convey my points in a simple way where I write about a certain part of the concept of control on each slide. Overall the task was very interesting. Visually structuring my analysis on the same system helped me to see how ideas correlate with each other and how each characters developes throughput the movie. It assisted me in having a better understanding of the movie and the concept of control.
