What I have learned through researching and analyzing data

Things I have Learned about myself and collecting data
In my Intrudction post, I discussed my social media use: Facebook, Twitter, YouTube, and Slack. I mainly use these platforms to stay up-to-date with news. I also mentioned a major concern with social media platforms are data and privacy concerns.

We played "Evolution of Trust," a game simulating to be weary of who you trust online - you never know what they want from you. I try to be careful, but sometimes you run into bad situations - like someone deceiving you on a product online. My example was a close friend purchasing a car, which was a learning experinece for her and those around her.

Marshall McLuhan said ‘The medium is the message’ because it is the medium that shapes and controls the scale and form of human association and action.” Technology has effects on people, and as a journalism student I know how people can get so intrigued in what they are seeing that they don't always fact-check information before sharing it and it is sometimes false. So I go behind them and check to ensure fake news is caught - at least in my friend's list.

Things I have learned about myself and collecing data
In project one, we analyzed online communities, such as TechEnclave. Using the information here, I learned about how I socialize with other people online with the platforms I use, and how I pick and choose the topics in which I discuss with others. We like to choose topics we know about or are interested in, which I know I do often online.

In reading Jean Baudrillard, we learn people have an issue distinguishing between reality and a representation of something. With the skills I have learned as a journalism student, I feel I don't have that issue. I take the time to fact-check information to ensure I know what is true, while also taking time to share that with others.

We discussed ways to ensure diversity and inclusivity in marketing. I pay attention to this regularly as a journalist, as we work to include everyone's opinions regarding the topic in which we are focusing on for a story.

The things I have Learned
In analyzing specific groups in social media, you learn there are an abundance of groups, such as Mormon Twitter, that exist. This is something I never really thought about, but this was interesting to learn. This made me wonder about groups I might enjoy being a part of as I branch out and use other social media platforms other than Facebook and YouTube.

Brand advocacy is vital in ensuring images are upheld. In analyzing specific celebrities or companies, I learned about techniques used, such as using public apologies after an incident occurs as a way to deter negative feedback.

Something I never thought about before were the issues surrounding female virtual assistants. Instead of increasing support of women, these virutal assistants decrease the support as people tend to subconsciously believe women should play subservient roles within society.

Red is the color of power!
Learning new subjects through analyzing data
Something everyone has been cautious about is how free platforms and such make their money - well, it is because they are selling your information to other companies. This is a topic I was somewhat familiar with, but my understanding continues to grow as the topic remains in headlines on the internet. We also discussed Foucault, but my understanding of his work remains vague, though not without effort to understand.

As advancements to Artificial Intelligence continue, individuals remain concerned with what the future may hold. As research studies continue, people will learn more about the pros and cons of AI and how it may help,or hurt society. This is something I continue to research regularly as it will continue to be a significant topic.

A new topic for myself was presented in Jack Halberstam's work, where consumers learn about "queer time" and "queer space," as ways to oppose institutions of heterosexuality - this is especially important in today's society, so I am slightly shocked I had not heard of it before. However, I am glad to have a basic understanding of this now.

What I learned about myself through analyzing other topics
This week we learned about ways social media platforms may be excluding those with disabilities, a topic I had not been presented before. We learn before that social media was not really accomodating those with disabilities, but with advancements occuring almost daily. Accomodations are, and will continue to be made for those struggling with disabilities.

This week I analyzed data I had collected on myself, where I focused on how often I chew gum. I learned my behavior: that I chew gum almost daily, from one to four pieces a day, and I always buy the brand EXTRA in a large plastic container, which is usually a mint flavor.
April 22, 2019
I continued analyzing my data and brainstorming a way to express the information for an audience in a creative way. I decided to use the gum wrappers from chewed gum to create color-coded-by-day hearts for week one and flowers for week two. I learned about my habits, was able to learn new topics and expand my understanding of other topics. Overall, I can say I have a better understanding of how social media affects daily life.

As a journalism student, I thought I was doing a great job accessing information, trying to give everyone a voice in my writing, and sharing what people want to hear. But the more you learn about social media, the more you learn about how to dig for further information and find exactly what you need. Thus, I think after this course, I have a better understanding of the skills I have acquired as a student and as a journalist.
