A floppy disk drive is a portable device. They are used for reading and writing on removable floppy discs.
Who invented the part, and what need did it fulfill?
The official inventor of the world’s first floppy disk seems to be IBM’s Alan Shugart but a Japanese inventor Yoshiro Nakamatsu claims he created world’s first floppy disk. The floppy disk was created to do many functions.

The floppy disk connects to the motherboard and the USB Port.
What are the costs for the part (budget version, high end version, etc.)
Floppy disks are a reasonable price and much cheaper than other storage devices.
It was no longer floppy, but rigid, making it less fragile and thus had a longer lifespan
Contains a cover for the medium, previously a piece of the magnetic sheet was always exposed, also increasing longevity.
Writable on both sides, doubling the storage capacity
Higher risk of damage to the drive from shock from kicking or dropping
