English Language Development A/B
Welcome to the second semester of English Language Development A/B (ELD A/B). This course provides specialized instruction and learning opportunities designed for beginning English Language Learners (ELLs). ELD A/B is a yearlong course and its completion with a passing grade is needed to fulfill graduation requirements and establish eligibility for advancement to Transitional and College Preparatory level English classes. This class is the first step that students take in building their English language and literacy skills as they work towards reclassification into general education classes.
This course's primary objectives are to increase the language proficiencies of non-native speakers of English by providing them with repeated opportunities to practice the skills that are needed to meet the academic standards set forth by the Simi Valley Unified School District (SVUSD) and State of California.
The goals and standards of achievement for ELL's are:
1) to use English to communicate in socially and culturally appropriate ways and
2) to use academic-based English within all content areas.
Students will be expected to demonstrate increasing competency in English language skills in the areas of speaking, listening, reading, and writing, including the application of grammatical conventions.
