Abseiling for Charity
On the 14th May Clarisa Juncal-Wilding will be abseiling down the Spinnaker Tower in Portsmouth, the abseil is 94 metres/ 308 foot high!!
Why not it’s a once in a lifetime opportunity…..and it is to raise money for The Rainbow Centre, a Hampshire based charity that inspire and support children with Cerebral Palsy and adults with a stroke, MS and Parkinson’s, adult Cerebral Palsy, Head Injury and their families.
Through a system of learning called Conductive Education they encourage and teach our children/participants to take an active role in their own development.
Please see charity’s webpage for more information
Any donations are greatly appreciated, please visit Clarisa's giving page
Collaborative Planning and Production Control in Action
When used regularly throughout the project lifecycle, Collaborative Planning and Production Control is proving an invaluable tool to understand the programme, constraints and build relationships by bringing teams and suppliers together to work collaboratively.
A recent session in Rose Kiln Court for the Cholsey STW project team saw the MEICA and civil supply chain partners engaging with eight2O prior to mobilisation. This was the fifth project collaborative planning session held by the team. This led to improved understanding of the project constraints, commissioning requirements plus a greater certainty of programme outcome.
Areas requiring more detailed planning and sequencing, such as at the inlet works were identified along with a number of make-ready needs, now being tracked weekly with Production Control techniques.
The next session is scheduled prior to start on site with TW operations and additional suppliers. The great benefit of this will be to leave the programme up on the wall in the site office and commence Production Control to really get the benefits of short interval control and issue/risk management.
Project Manager, Samantha Mills commented, ‘It is brilliant seeing how the different parties start getting up out of their seats, planning the works together while talking to each other, and at the end, how everyone can understand the sequence and timescales we all need to commit to achieving.’
The benefits of collaboration are clear to all, improving visibility of milestones, interfaces and reducing risks to project completion.
Innovation - 'view from above'
The use of Unmanned Ariel Vehicles (UAVs), commonly known as drones, are becoming increasingly popular on construction projects.
Following the establishment of the Digital Room, we are delighted to announce the eight2O drone team are collaborating with SMB to improve the way we operate this equipment and develop the potential to provide in-house drone services to all projects.
The drone team together with the Thames Water team (Jon Lorimer) will be able to support all projects to enable efficiencies and provide support to share and learn across all the partners within eight2O.
Eight2O have partnered with a specialist drone company, SKY-FUTURES, who have been building software to support the needs of the industrial inspection market. The technology ensures safer data collection and better, smarter outputs harnessing the unique aerial perspective of drones. Sky Future will provide a software tool that enables the drone information to be viewed, analysed and interpreted, to enable teams to have a better understanding of projects and assets from your desktop.
SKY FUTURES have recently worked with John Kingdon Framework Director at Costain on a UAV Tank Inspection using a confined space. Please click on video to view.

Innovation - 'view from above'
The drone team are currently using industry leading drone technology, which has a range of all types and sizes of drones from the Flyability Elios and the ‘Mavic Pro’ used for Confined spaces to the ‘Inspire 2’ for aerial photography provided high resolution imagery.
We currently have 2 fully trained pilots within eight2O using the equipment, governed by an operating manual which incorporates the Thames Water Health and Safety Essential Standard 28. The operating manual has been approved by the Civil Aviation Authority (CAA) and we have updated our insurance provision to cover this work.
If you would like to be considered as a pilot to the drone team, or you would like to use the team on your project then contact; Harvey on or Mohamed.

Brand New Best Practice COSHH Store
Mogden CHP and Aeration Project has recently installed a new COSHH waste store for the storage and containment of drums containing hazardous waste.
This store has been created by Constantine Daniel, the site’s talented storeman and is a good example of best practice on site.
Why is this store good practice?
This new store is compliant in terms of SHE requirements for the following reasons as the store:
• Provides physical cover stopping any egress of rain water into the drums or storage area. This not only maximises the storage capacity of the bunds beneath the drums from preventing rainfall reaching the bunds but it also stops additional hazardous waste being generated (from rainfall egress)
• Contains adequate bunding for the drums that meet oil storage regulations
• Is lockable to ensure only those authorised to enter this area can do so
• Securely stores the drums upright to prevent any contents being accidentally spilt into the wider environment
• Provides a safe means of access to this store via the ramp. The addition of roofing felt provides a non-slip later to minimise the risk of slips, trips and falls.
• Is located away from any environmentally sensitive receptors, such as surface or foul water drains or watercourses.
• Contains waste drums that are all correctly labelled.
Brand New Best Practice COSHH Store
This COSHH store has been well received on site and the site storeman is to be congratulated for his initiative for coming up with a bespoke solution to store hazardous waste that meets the site’s needs and eight20 SHE requirements.
A big thumbs up to the Mogden site team for implementing this great example of best practice in the storage of hazardous waste produced by their site.
Great work Guys.
Children from St Edmund's School Say Thank You
At the end of last year some of our eight2O colleagues took time out to revamp the school playground at Maidenhead's St Edmund School, including the construction of a new picnic area and shed.
Well done and thank you to everyone that was involved in this project. The pupils at St Edmunds School have written in to thank you for transforming their playground.

Office Etiquette – Dos & Don’ts
.
Refrain from being loud.
Whether you're on the phone or talking to a colleague be aware of how loud you speak and avoid speaking in a loud or argumentative manner. Be especially considerate around meeting rooms and shared/open office areas.
Put your mobile phone on vibrate mode. And if you listen to a radio or stream music wear a headset and keep the volume to a level that does not disturb those around you.
Don't consistently interrupt people.
It suggests that your time and opinion is more important than theirs. If your co-worker is on the phone or having a work-related discussion don't linger or interrupt, leave a quick note in front of them asking them to call/see you when they are done.
Be sensitive to others’ need for privacy.
Don’t read someone else’s faxes, emails, mail or computer screens.
If you need to discuss anything sensitive or private with a colleague find a room.
Only share personal things at work that you wouldn’t mind reading in next week’s newspaper - remember that when you send emails, never write anything that would be a problem if forwarded.
Innovative Technology – Digital Room Now Open
.
Workplace etiquette is something that helps smooth daily interactions within an office or site environment and is essential for a productive and happy work place, it also helps ensure that you don't become an office nuisance because you've been irritating people with unhelpful habits or comments. Not that anyone deliberately aims to irritate but there are some actions that can unwittingly cause others discomfort or unease.
There will always be boundaries of respect for others that you need to mindful of, everyone should lead by examplel by demonstrating the following good manners.
Be on Time
Show up on time for meetings, being punctual says you respect the time of your colleagues, which in turn it will encourage them to respect your time too.
Keep meetings to the scheduled amount of time.
Don’t force the next group to stand outside the meeting room waiting for you to finish.
Watch your language
When interacting with others in the work environment remember that profanity offends some people. Also, avoid innuendos or jokes at the expense of other people.
Innovative Technology – Digital Room Now Open
The eight2O team have opened a ‘Digital Room’ at the Hampton hub office. The room is open to all with the purpose of showcasing and demonstrating technology available for projects to use.
These technologies include:
• Unmanned Aerial Vehicles (Drones)
• Oculus Rift Virtual Reality (VR) headsets
• 360 Degree video cameras
• Laser scanning rendering facility
• Hololens – Augmented Reality (AR) headsets
The team are keen to explore the different ways these technologies can be used to add value to projects as well as demonstrate the use cases that have already been identified, so if you have any challenges that you think we could help with, please get in touch.
