George Karangioules - Sound Designer/Composer
I always liked to teach. A lot! Since i was back home i used to teach at the local conservatory a few times a week teaching the guitar, harmony, ensembles etc.
I would really love to be able to share with students all this knowledge and skills i have . Creativity can be a valuable asset especially for the children at Beacon Academy and i am eager to offer it to them.
In the next few slides i will offer my suggestions on various activities for workshops, classes, golden time etc. All these activities are just suggestions and i am able to deliver them successfully.
Private instrumental lessons could be organised for the students at a weekly basis. I am an electric guitar teacher and since children love the modern sound, we could engage with them in various styles of music such as rock, blues, jazz, metal, pop and more. I can also teach bass and basic drums.
The students can practice in different topics that will boost their creativity levels and performance such as:
1)Improvisation techniques - soloing
3)Harmony and Theory
5)Learning new songs. Building repertoire.
The fifth one is actually my favorite. Students can make their own requests of a song they want to learn and i can teach them how to play it on the guitar.
Ensembles was one of the best classes when i was a student. We would all tearn up at school with our instruments and the teacher would put us in groups, small bands. We would then practice on certain songs, play them and then come again next week to learn more.
1)We were all very excited to learn new songs. I was so impatient for Thursday's ensemble to come.
2)With many of the other ensemble members we eventually made bands and played together for years to come. We created bonds, out of music making.
3)We developed skills, we became better players.
4)We organised small concerts at school. Imagine that, rock concerts at school.
In 2016, there is nothing more creative than game development for children. Children can engage with each other and collaborate in making simple computer games that they can export and play themselves. I have worked in almost every game engine that exists and i have gathered a few of the best sites that the school could use for that activity.
Although all these tools are basic and designed specifically for children, they are the best starting point since students can advance to more complex engines like Unity, Unreal Engine and Cry Engine in the future. There might be a potential of becoming game designers themselves. Talents exist everywhere!
All the sounds that we hear to a movie or a video game are fake. They are not recorded live but they are being attached to the image afterwards in the studio. For instance, if we watch a movie and we see a road and a car how do we make the sound for that scene?
A sound designer will go out, will use his microphones to record a real car and then get back to the studio and attach the car sound to the image. That might sound too complicated but it is not. A simplified version of the task could do wonders..for instance.
Students are given a short video. It can be short part of a cartoon movie, an animation, anything. They are also given a set of sounds and they are being asked to attach the sounds of their choice to the video. The combinations are endless and the result can be amazing.
Students can also record their own sounds to use to different sound design projects. How? I can bring my microphone at school and we all go outdoors or indoors and record various sounds that can be used later on to their own video projects. We can record footsteps, doors opening and closing, metallic, plastic sounds, ambient sounds, wind sounds. There are so many things at school that you can record. The only limit is the imagination. Needless to say that the cocntruction class is a fun house with endless sound sources.
Finally, we will transfer the sounds to the computer and students will hear the results of their work.
To sum up, there are even more activities that we could offer to the students such as web design and animation. There are amazing platforms like:
1)www.wix.com (an excellent web designer for students)
2)www.goanimate.com (amazing video animation tool. Childrens can make their own cartoons easilly)
3)www.powtoon.com (another great animation tool)
