Deployed with SEAL Team 10 in Afghanistan, Luttrell and SEAL Team 10 are getting ready for a mission to capture a terrorist leader who he calls for secrecy "Ben Sharmak" and the name of the mission is Operation Redwing.
June 27, 2005
Operation Redwing is a go and Team 10 (consisting of Luttrell, Matthew "Axe" Axelson, Danny Dietz, and Michael "Murph" Murphy) lands in the Kush Mountains.
1200 - The beginning
Team 10 are hiding up in the mountains looking for Sharmak when an Afghani three men stumbles upon them while herding about 100 goats followed by two more men. They finally decide to release the men.
1230 - First shot
The SEALs tried to then hurry and find a good spot to defend themselves Soon after, a force of Taliban fighters inevitably show up. Lined along the top ridge of the hill, between eighty and a hundred Taliban righters stood. Each with their own AK-47. And some carrying RPGs.They began to move down the flanks. Marcus take the first shot at a nearby. The firefight begins.
1231 - Rely on strategy
The bullets start flying, from ever possible direction. They attempt to cut down the enemy numbers to give themselves a better chance. They realize that they need to give up their high ground, because they had all the angles.
In order to get to lower ground they only had one option. Fall. They take their first fall off the side of this mountain. During the fall Marcus hurt his shoulder, broken his back and hurt his face. And Mikey had been shot in the stomach. Once Marcus, Mikey, and Axe were together and the Taliban had found them they began shooting again without missing a beat. Soon Danny came down, but he wasn't moving Danny's right thumb had been shot off.
Once again they needed flatter ground and there was only one way to get there. Down. So they fell once again down the side of the mountain. When they got to the flat bit the firing continued. Then Danny got shot a second time in the lower back, bullet coming out of his stomach. And soon after the Taliban reinforcements came. Danny was shot again in the neck, his fourth bullet.
1300 - Fall #3
Now that they were once again compromised they had to move. And by now they know there is only one way to go, and one way to get there. So they take their third fall. When Marcus landed he got stuck under a log and breaking his nose, and then was shot at by an RPG and sent him strait over the cliff, landing next to Axe who was in firing position. Soon Danny and Murphy joined them. Then Danny was hit for the fifth time at the base of the neck, and could no longer walk. After the Axe was shot in the chest. But everyone continued firing, and fighting.
They began moving again, Marcus pulling Danny with him, when Danny was hit a sixth time in the face. He died in Marcus' arms, and then joined his Father in heaven. Marcus pulled I'm our of the line of fire and said goodbye
They moved to try and get better ground. Once they found a sound defensive position the opened fire once again. Mike was shot in chest, and Axe in the head. Knowing full well what he was doing Mike walked into the line of fire to make the phone call that could save them all. By doing to he was shot and killed after making the call. Marcus and Axe continued to fight, though Axe was fading due to the horrible would sustained to his head.
Marcus goes down to where Axe is to see if there is anything to do for his friend. He is trying to fix his bandage when Axe tells Marcus, "You stay alive. And tell Cindy I love her." Those were Axes last words, and he died next to Marcus. (If you are reading this Mrs Martinez I'm balling right now)
Marcus had managed to wedge his way between shelter and awaited fire. He heard them getting closer but he soon realized they weren't coming for him. His rescuer was shot down by the Taliban, and inside were more of his bothers.
0200 - Still Fighting
Marcus after regaining feeling in his legs began to climb the mountain in the dead of night. He was determined to get to the top where the fact high ground was. While climbing he missed a step and had one again another long fall. And he heard Taliban around him.
Finally after hours he hears water. But the men he heard earlier have caught up with him. Only these guys are there to help. After some yelling they come to an understand and help him get water. Then they carry him back to their village, and patch up all of his wounds. They clothe, feed and protect him from the Taliban that come knocking down doors. And Marcus continues to fight them when they do.
After many days, Marcus was rescued. The army had been searching for him and his team for days, and they finally found him. Gulab helped them to identify Marcus, and he got to go home.
