Wide Area Networks allow you to connect to networks across the world. This is the current type of network we use, when click on a website as most of our websites data (HTML, JS, CSS) are stored on external servers around the world that our routers need to connect to.
How does the Internet work?

The user (you) clicks on a website. To load the data on the page you requested, it send the information to the senders server.
The data you requested (website) is split into packets and sent through the the senders ISP and through a wide range of routers to reach your router
The data when it reaches your device, reassembles the packets meaning your web page has been loaded
So how can websites be hacked?
Because website data (HTML,JS,CSS) is stored on an external server, somewhere in the world, hackers can gain access to the server if they are not secure enough or through malware implanted into the server company by them, by sending it in packets to the site owners server..
Some websites allow the uploading of documents, that are stored on servers the same as the website data, in extreme cases, hackers will upload malware into their files which is then sent back to the owners(senders) server this then gets them access to user information. It always to make sure your website protocol is: HTTPS rather than HTTP.
How to protect your site.
HTTPS is when the computers agree on a "code" between them, and then they scramble the messages using that "code" so that no one in between can read them. This keeps your information safe from hackers say for example when you are entering your credit card details for an online purchase. Ensure your site uses HTTPS Encryption
Another way, sites can be hacked is if the user has not downloaded the latest software updates from the site hosting company. Through many methods as the content on most websites isn't stored locally, most of them use sites like WordPress where to edit the page, there is an admin login page easily accessible. If the user hasn't done an update, penetrating the login system is easily done. So make sure your site receives the latest updates from the host.

Because most websites source code (HTML, JS, CSS) are held on their party servers, to edit a page i.e WordPress there is an admin login. As it's part of the website, there is JS that goes with it, that allows users to edit pages. By finding the JS code and editing it, users are able to gain access to the main frame without entering details. Once the hacker has logged in, he has access to see all passwords etc for users and uses this to make defacement towards websites.
