Visual Hallucinations in children with schizophrenia.
In the subtext of his novel the graveyard book's plot, we believe that Neil Gaiman addresses Schizophrenia. He Presents sub-textual commentary on our theory.
In the novel, Bod suffers from Schizophrenia. "Visual hallucinations of a psychotic nature were reported by 26.5% of patients. The experience of childhood interpersonal trauma increased the likelihood of having psychotic visual hallucinations." This shows that people who experience major losses in their life are more likely to see hallucinations. In "The Graveyard Book", we believe the ghosts Bod sees are hallucinations that help him cope with the death of his family.
"A decrease in normal functions, include a withdrawal from society." In our novel, Bod is almost never exposed to the outside of the graveyard. The only logical reason that this could happen would be if the hallucinations he sees "order" him not to go out.
"One of the many symptoms from Schizophrenia include the inability to show emotion." With "The Graveyard Book" Bod does not feel or show a lot of emotion.
In conclusion, Bod is not magical and can not see ghost. The ghosts are imaginary and he makes them up in his head. They can also come from false memories, which started when his parents where murdered. This means Bod has schizophrenia.
