Why was the tomato modified?
The whole reason tomatoes were modified was because of an enzyme/substance called polygalacturonase. You can call this PG for short. This enzyme ripens the tomato, making it soft and squishy. Scientist genetically modified the tomato by removing PG from the tomato plants and cloned these genes. This makes it a better tomato that can last longer than a regular tomato. This was then used to create genetically modified tomatoes, Flavr Savr.
