CLOZAPINE
Clozapine is an antipsychotic medication. It works by changing the actions of chemicals in the brain.
Clozapine is used to treat severe schizophrenia, or to reduce the risk of suicidal behaviour in people with schizophrenia or similar disorders.
It is an atypical antipsychotic, sometimes known as neuroleptics, and belongs to a group of drugs known as dibenzodiazepines.
It is used to provide rapid sedation and antipsychotic effects in schizophrenic patients for whom other antipsychotic medication has not worked, or has caused severe side effects.
Patients newly started on clozapine must have an FBC taken weekly for the first 18 weeks of treatment then fortnightly for the next 34 weeks. After that they receive monthly monitoring for as long as they are taking clozapine.
