McCulloch v. Maryland
Facts: 1791 - Bank of the US was established
Purpose - Help pay off debts of the Revolutionary War and create a national currency
Controversy - Proposed by Federalist, Alexander Hamilton - Anit-Federalists like Thomas Jefferson didn't like it because they thought it was not within the federal government's explicit powers and was an overreach of federal power
- 1817 - The national bank was established in Maryland. Maryland did not like this and taxed it. McCulloch (bank clerk) refused to pay the tax. Maryland sued McCulloch.
