Global Advancements in Engineered Concrete
“Completely understanding concrete is akin to unravelling the human DNA genome.”

Through its 10,000 plus years of use, concrete has continually improved.
Some of the greatest advancements are as a result of significant breakthroughs such as the formulation and production methodology for Portland cement, along with the introduction and commercial acceptance of concrete additives to enhance concrete’s performance.
Architecture is the struggle against water
Water Related Issues
Respiratory and Health Issues
Ugly aesthetic appearance
Calcium hydroxide moves through capillaries in the concrete where it reaches the surface and reacts with carbon dioxide.
Adhesives are pressure sensitive and water based.
In the presence of trapped water vapor, there is an inherent failure.
No treatment will combat asthma caused by dampness if we continue to regularly re-visit the damp environment that caused it.
The most common form of deterioration in concrete
structures are Reinforcement Corrosion.
Passivating layer around steel is broken and moisture and oxygen begin to break down the steel – rust forms.
As the steel rusts and increases in volume, additional force acts upon the concrete.
The result - Spalling
“While 90% of commercial litigation cases focus on water-related damages, only about 1.5% of the typical building budget is dedicated to waterproofing and related issues.”
What’s Been Happening?
What’s driving this trend?
Traditional additives for impermeability are failing
“…..there has been a mafia-like push to seal slabs prior to laying vinyl which is raising the cost of laying vinyl through the roof”.
Leads to one of the greatest causes of Budget overruns and Time delays
We need a product which neither weakens the concrete nor is reactive
Cures for a period of 6-8 months
Do any current options available to Architects, address the serious moisture issues and enable early access for laying vinyl and carpet?
The proven NANO technology material
A concrete admixture that creates a nano-chemical reaction permanently eliminating capillary action
Eliminates the effects of the free water by turning it into CSH gel.
Makes concrete impermeable to liquid and vapour.
Allows easy installation of no VOC adhesives and coatings.
What is free water?
Typically one cubic metre of concrete contains 120-130 litres of water.
This water is distinguishable into two categories.
How does VLEC work?
During its plastic stage, capillaries begin to form.
Some materials settle - Water is pushed out -Bleed channels are formed.
The Perfect Path
The bleed capillaries act as a perfect path for moisture movement.
Vapour can now travel into and out of the concrete easily through this capillary network formed.
Vapor Lock 20/20 + Free Water - Calcium Silicate Hydrate Gel (CSH Gel)
The gel produced from Vapor Lock fills the capillary system, locking the network within the concrete while simultaneously using up the free water.

The Big Test
Photo by Paul Bulai on Unsplash
Takes a minimum of 220 years for one single drop of water to travel through 100mm of VLEC
For crystalline growth products, it takes 7.2 months
Vapor Lock’s single most proven advantage over any other product in its class…. is that of its size
There is no other particle in concrete’s matrix that is anywhere near as fine as Vapor Lock 20/20
= Therefore effectively closing every opportunity for moisture ingress or egress
Comparison of Cells and Microbes
Vapour Lock particle is 20,000 times smaller than Rhinovirus
“4 litres of Vapor Lock encompasses trillions of particulate matter, that when combined, the Blaine (surface area) would cover the entire surface area of planet Earth”
