Climate vs. Weather
People often think that climate and weather are the same things, but they're not!
Weather is the condition of the outdoors at a specific time and place.
For example, is it raining? Is it sunny? What is the temperature?
Climate is based on the weather conditions of large regions over a long long period of time.
Can you describe the climate in the UK?
Is CLIMATE CHANGE new?
The Earth's climate has been changing for millions of years and this always happened slowly.
As climate changes, new environments are created and animals and plants need to adapt to survive. How would you adapt to living in the North Pole?
The Earth has had 11 Ice Ages in the last 4.6 billion years!
means to become more suited for a certain environment
Why is Climate change different now?
Scientists say that recently, the world's temperature has been rising much faster!
This is to do with more of a gas called 'Carbon Dioxide'. We call it CO2 for short.
This graph shows how CO2 has been increasing in the last 300 years
This graph shows how the Earth's temperature has been rising in the past 140 years!
WHAT CONTROLS THE EARTH'S HEAT?
The atmosphere is like a blanket around the Earth.
The Sun sends heat rays through space. Some of it bounces off the atmosphere and some of it goes past to the Earth.
Heat rays are known as
Some of the heat rays escape from the atmosphere.
Others are absorbed into the Earth or are reflected by greenhouse gasses (like CO2) and stay trapped.
Without greenhouse gases, it would always be cold!
WHAT CONTROLS THE EARTH'S HEAT?
is carbon dioxide!
How do humans affect climate change?
We burn coal, oil, and gas to heat our homes and produce electricity. This releases a lot of greenhouse gasses into the atmosphere.
We drive cars, buses and airplanes that burn fuel. This releases a lot of greenhouse gases.
Trees absorb CO2 and gives us oxygen. When we cut down trees, we add more CO2 to the atmosphere.
To produce the meat that we eat, lots of trees are cut down and greenhouse gasses are released.
The more greenhouse gasses in the atmosphere, the more heat gets reflected back to Earth which makes temperatures rise.
What happens when temperatures rise?
But why is that bad?
Hotter summers mean more droughts which is bad for animals and crops
Ice caps melt which means many animals lose their habitat, and sea levels also rise
More flooding and storms can damage cities or villages and can be very dangerous
Warmer temperatures increase harmful bacteria
Droughts happen when there is no rain in a long time and everything becomes dry!
oh no! is it too late to help?
The Earth needs
like you to defend it!
So what can we do?
What is being green?
So do I need to paint myself green?
Being green means caring for the environment!
You can care for the environment by learning, doing good things, and teaching others.
Re-use and Re-cycle!
Walk or bike instead of taking the car!
Use less electricity and water!
Try eating less meat!
Well done, you're now one step closer to being a true climate warrior
