How do you want to make your mark on this experience?
Though my GA experience was limited to one year, here is an overview of some of the projects I was given the opportunity to start and or work on throughout my time.
I trust that you'll be able to expand on these projects, change them and pursue others that aid you in your professional journey, but also aid the college in supporting student needs.
In THIS Issue
1. Diversity Initiatives/Support Services
2. Study Buddies & Tutoring Services
4. Spring into Success
Inclusion Initiatives: Most of this comes from a need to build community within the college.
Spring into Success:
Diversity & Inclusion*
What/Why: Before I got here, it was identified that student's of color within the college could use additional support services. Upon starting here in the fall of 2018, I sent out a survey asking students who identified as multiracial or non-white what their experiences were like in the college. I also asked what resources did they think would be helpful and any additional feedback or suggestions.
Participation: We had 24 students total participate in the survey with the majority identifying as Hispanic/Latinx, Biracial (Black and White), or Asian American.
What went well: We got some great responses for suggestions on how to move forward in providing resources and feedback on areas to focus future projects. Ex: Supporting RSOs, organization(s) for students of color, collaboration with multi-cultural Greeks. Overall, students said CEHS is an inclusive college where they feel a sense of acceptance and belonging.
What didn't go as planned: We did not have as much student participation on the survey as we'd hoped. It was open for two weeks with two reminders sent out. Also, the students that opted-in for a follow-up meeting, except for two, did not respond for follow-up. In addition, it does not look as though the college has diversity/inclusion initiatives in place for a project like this to follow, have thorough development, and long-lasting support. This isn't the type of project we want to be seen as a one and done/lone initiative it needs to be worked through with upper college administrators and faculty.
What could be done in the future:
- Connect with current CEHS RSO's
- Connect with the Future Teachers of Color Organization to see what they do, how they do it, and possible recommendations.
- Reach out to campus partners such as TRIO, OASIS, NCPA, and possibly multicultural Greeks for collaboration.
