Keystone AEA is governed by a nine-member board of directors, elected by local school boards. The members each represent between one and five school districts within a director district. The Board is the policy-making body with powers and duties delegated by state laws and guidelines. Board meetings are the third Monday of the month but are subject to change.

Keystone AEA offers professional learning for educators to enhance their skills and practices to improve student learning, including courses for licensure renewal, para-educator and substitute authorization programs, and courses held within the agency and at school locations.

AEA PD Online is a statewide collaborative initiative of Iowa's area education agencies (AEAs). Together, we bring educators high quality professional development in many different formats, meeting teachers' needs and providing just-in-time training. KPEC, Keystone's Premier Education Conference is held annually in June. The comprehensive conference offers learning for all educators at an incredible value. The 2017 conference had five strands to choose from: The Whole Child, Special Education, Technology, Leadership, and Curriculum Content Areas. Keynote addresses were made by Pete Hall of ASCD; Joe Beckman, youth motivator; and featured speaker Trevor Ragan, returning after KPEC 2016, focused on Growth MIndset. All 23 of Keystone AEA's member districts sent attendees to KPEC 2017.

Breakout sessions covered topics such as:

Keystone AEA continues to provide support for Teacher Leaders by offering a variety of Teacher Leader Networking opportunities, opportunities for Jim Knight training, and a hybrid of classes with Dianne Sweeney and an online community of learning.
