The Syrian government is currently a dictatorship under the rule of Bashar Al'Assad.
Located in the Middle East; Western Asia
Biggest issue is Syrian Civil War,
The War came about as a result of the Assad regime
This war is dangerous for both journalists and civilians
Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof; or abridging the freedom of speech, or of the press; or the right of the people peaceably to assemble, and to petition the Government for a redress of grievances.
Free speech in Syria is very bad- journalists have been abducted and tortured over their work- it is illegal to publish any information on the armed forces. Ordinary citizens and journalists have been adbucted/killed over being opposed to the goverment. Religous freedom is generally okay so long as it isn't subversive to the overnment. Online communication is monitored and you can be persecuted for speaking out aginst the government online.
Rules to Follow
Syria is dangerous to visit due to the war and terrorism, and is a Level 4 Do Not Travel on the U.S government's Travel Advisory. But if you do visit, women can be subject to a 'virginity test' if they are suspected of immoral behavior (like being alone in a room with a man). You must pay hotel bills with non-Syrian currency. Most restaurants and stores only accept cash. During Ramadan, refrain from smoking, drinking or eating in public from sunrise to sunset.
