**MATHEMATICS IN THE WORKPLACE**

It is my understanding builders need good mathematical knowledge within their workplace, to allow them to succeed and to avoid making any mistakes during the building process.

BUILDERS

When builders use their knowledge and skills to building anything, whether it be as large as a house or a block of apartments, or as small as a coffee table, it is assumed some form of mathematics must be used to accurately design and piece everything together.

**TYPES OF MATHEMATICS USED**

These are the different types of mathematical knowledge I believe would be used by a builder in the work place

This would be used when measuring different spaces, eg size of windows to fit into the window cavity.

**Measurement**

Woking out the structural loads of the building, knowing how much weight can be placed on a top story floor.

**Weight**

Working out how much of each ingredient is needed when making and pouring concrete.

**Ratio**

**TYPES OF MATHEMATICS USED**

More aspects of Mathematics I believe would be used in a builders workplace...

Used when joining tiles and ensuring there is the correct amount to fit in the set space

**Multiplication & Division**

Used when measuring angles such as the pitch of a roof.

**Angles**

When measuring and copying shapes to fit in particular spaces, such as glass stair railings.

TYPES OF MATHEMATICS USED

More aspects of Mathematics I believe would be used in a builders workplace...

Used to ensure all measurements of multiple things can be combined and fit correctly in different spaces.

**Addition & Subtraction**

Creating objects or solutions to balance pieces of materials and make building achievable where it may not always be.

**Problem Solving**

Used when setting materials such as water proofing or concrete. Also important when managing trades to ensure people aren't standing around doing nothing.

Through the research complete on mathematics used by builders in the workplace, it is evident there is a large degree being used every single day. While it is not essential to study a mathematic degree to get a building job, an extensive level of math knowledge is required (Western Sydney University, 2018).

The average builder works approximately 45 hours per week over 5 or 6 days, constantly using their physical and mental abilities. Builders don't just get out there and get their hands dirty doing manual labor, a large number of builders are responsible for a range of managerial and administrative responsibilities (SEEK, 2018).

BUILDERS IN THE WORK PLACES

**DAY IN THE LIFE OF A BUILDER**

A day in the life of a builder we see these tradesmen use mathematics in multiple areas of work. Some of these include drawing or interpreting plans using measurement and angles, writing and submitting quotes in dollar amounts, inspecting building work ensuring regulations are met using formulas, organisation of other trades such as plumbers, electricians, painters and others through time management skills, problem solving when things don't go to plan or work out, calculating costs of materials and trades to stay in a budget and performing building work themselves.

Reflection of Mathematics and the roles it plays for builders in the workplace...

- There were at least an extra 7 uses of mathematics, builders use I hadn't considered.

- The use of Trigonometry and Algebra was surprisingly used.

- All predictions of mathematics made were used, along with a range of others

Technology in the work place has changed the degree of mathematical error in building greatly. Through the apps that are available to use for measuring, taking out guess work, to the programs allowing for customers to see a visual representation of what their building could look like in a small scale.

Mathematics is everywhere, even the places we least expect it. Without mathematics society would struggle to function and progress as it does now.
