Bycatch is the incidental capture of non-target species that become trapped by commercial fishing nets. Every year, at least 7.3 million tons of marine life are caught incidentally.
Why has the number of fish discarded decreased?
Over the years the fish catch increased as technology developed. But since the 1990's catches began to decline. This is due to the number of fish in the ocean having halved since the 1970's.
