Let's take a look at this short example
Using the REPORTED SPEECH
"He said that he was our new teacher for that subject."
"I am your new teacher for this subject."
WHAT IS DIFFERENT?
WHAT HAS CHANGED?
WHAT IS THE REPORTED SPEECH?
We use the reported speech to explain what someone has said using sentences grammatically correct.
We are not tape recorders who repeat the same information as we heard it, so we need to know how to REPORT it.
THIS IS HOW WE CHANGE THE TENSES
MARIA: My mother is 45 years old.
ME: Maria said (that) her mother was 45 years old.
MARIA: My mother is cleaning the kitchen.
ME: Maria said (that) her mother was cleaning the kitchen.
MARIA: My mother has worked here for 20 years.
ME: Maria said that her mother had worked there for 20 years.
