Effects of World War 1 that turned Canada into a Nation
World War 1 started in 1914 after the assassination on Archduke Ferdinand. This triggered the beginning of the war and Canada's involvement.
Brief summary of World War 1 :
During and after the First World War, Canada has been evolved into its own empowering nation. It all first started with Canada being part of the British empire
Canada had sent their soldiers to fight in the war with Britain. They also did not control their own foreign affairs.
"when Britain is at war, Canada is at war. There is no distinction."
-Prime Minister Sir Wilfrid Laurier
Later on the soldiers that fought in the war with Britain earned Canada a place in the peace table and Canada was on the start of its own.
The war opened disagreements between the French and English Canadians including different points of views they each had. This followed by the conscription happening in 1917.
Men and young boys signing up for war
Before the war the ideal of a women works were staying home cleaning, and waiting for either their brothers, husbands, sons and fathers to return home.
Meanwhile during the war things started to change for women.Women were offered jobs in factories, fields and other places that were supposedly reserved for men. They were also given the right to vote.
Canada's government was drained financially during the war and after Canada had to pay $164 million per year to pay off their debt. This debt was the cause that began our income tax today.
Women's lives were finally changed and saw there role in society.
The government was slowly starting to become its own as a democracy later on.
National Identity of Canada
At the start Canada was just known as a part of the British Empire. Canada was not a part of any national conflicts with other countries during the war.
In the end Canada had its own national identity because of its involvement overtime. This also meaning Canada was not only just a person that looks Canadian but the diversity of other nationalities in Canada.
Canada is now a strong empowering country today because of World War 1.
