Studies commissioned by FAO estimated annual global food loss and waste by quantity at roughly 40-50 percent of root crops, fruits, and vegetables. Food loss and waste (FLW) is an increasingly important issue in Canada, Mexico, and the United States, where close to 170 million tonnes of food produced for human consumption are lost and wasted—across the food supply chain. Food waste in landfills is a significant source of methane gas—a greenhouse gas (GHG) 25 times stronger than carbon dioxide. FLW also has environmental and socio-economic impacts, including the inefficient use of natural resources, economic loss, biodiversity loss, and public health issues.
Losses in the distribution of proper transport and handling of food are critical throughout the supply chain, particularly with perishable goods that require cold conditions. Inconsistent refrigeration occurs when trucks malfunction or are involved in accidents. Other handling problems occur when produce is kept at improper temperatures, such as when it sits too long on loading docks. If these perishables do make it to a store, they have a shorter shelf life by the time they get there.
One industry consultant estimates that up to one in seven truckloads of perishables delivered to Supermarkets is thrown away.
