Link to resources arranged in subject hierarchies, encourages users to both browse through, and search for, results.. Subject directories are often annotated. They are selected, evaluated, and maintained by humans.
Are paid services provided by libraries which offer premium content in the form of reference materials, journal and newspaper articles, broadcast
transcripts, podcasts, etc.
Host billions of webpages, gathered by automated "bots" allowing broad, often overwhelming searches. Search engines vary in the ways they collect sites and organize results. They can only access free material.
Search across a variety of search engines and organize the collected results. Good for a broad sweep type search. (dogpile; Clusty, Sputtr, etc.)
