Jonah and The Whale is a famous tale about a man named Jonah deciding to turn against God. This results in God getting angry at Jonah resulting in devastating results, God commands a whale to swallow Jonah. Jonah later reflects over the sins he has committed and does a collective prayer, after three days God forgives Jonah and sets him back on his tracks.
Purpose Of Main Characters
Jonah- Jonah in the story is an arrogant person
which doesn't take orders from the likes of people and even his own God. Later he learns from his mistakes after experiencing purgatory (whale)
Whale- The whale represents purgatory
God- God in the story is a wise
person, he knows what is best
for Jonah but when Jonah rudely
declined his request, he punished him
The reason why you should check out this Bible story is because.
1) The story is all about faith, faith is the fundamental basis for a young catholic’s Christian journey.
Young teens and even adolescent kids could relate and learn off Jonah mistakes, as seen in the story-
it is said that Jonah declined god's request and ended up dealing with the grand power of God. Kids
could learn from this and learn that God is a force to be reckoned with as seen Jonah 1:17 NRSV,
“But God provided a large fish to swallow up Jonah, and Jonah was in the belly of the fish three days a
nd three nights”.
2) The story also tells that you should trust in God. This could tell young kids that to trust in God, God
provided shelter, food, and even animals so that we can live. People who have faith and pray often have
a better chance of good fortune and riches, kids should really read up Jonah and the Whale for inspiration.
3) The story also has the moral to never give up on. As seen on Jonah 2 NRSV it is said that while Jonah
was in the whale's belly, Jonah prayed a collective pray to the lord. In the prayer, he is extremely sorry
for the sins he has done against God. Kids need to know that God will forgive you, kids normally give up
on God's forgiveness.
