‘Mourinho’ is an ITV4 based documentary made in 2012. Taking a look at the last 10 years of his football managerial career. It shows the highs and lows of his phenomenal work spanning across all clubs across Europe. The documentary description is as follows: ‘A look at the career of one of footballs most charismatic figures. In the last ten years his managerial record has been incomparable with a little controversy along the way.’ This documentary will only have a limited audience as people who are interested in Jose Mourinho or football will want to watch this documentary. However the documentary does give an educational aspect where it does explain many of the subjects before delving into them allowing an audience who aren't familiar, able to understand and be interested by the documentary.
Mourinho is a reflexive and expository documentary. It shows interviews of Jose Mourinho which run as a spine for the documentary where his answers are used as voice-over work for much of the documentary covering over archive footage. Mourinho gives very long slow and interesting answers allowing for a more compelling watch. Although much of the footage taken is of the interviewer and Mourinho sitting down, there are plenty of shots used in the interviews using many different angles of Mourinho with close-ups and over the shoulder shots. Many of the other shots are archive footage showing real life action shots of him as a manager during games. Because the interviewer is behind the camera, it makes the documentary very Mourinho concentrated - as if Mourinho himself was making the documentary. Other interviews are shown with the likes of Sir Alex Ferguson who was a great rival. Showing opposite or oposing views gives the documentary a more riveting feel as the audience are given different perspectives.
ITV’s documentaries tend to be about current events and affairs and generally for a more mature audience. They choose to make their documentaries about events that have just happened or things that are popular at the time. For example a documentary was made called ‘The other side of Jimmy Saville’ which followed a month after the Jimmy Saville case. ITV know people will want to watch it as it is a topic which is very publicized at the time and will attract more attention. ITV also tend to broadcast documentaries of a controversial topic and therefore will make more expository modes of documentaries. In our documentary we are portraying a slightly controversial topic with the increase of more street art and more famous and prominent artists coming to the scene such as Banksy and his recent opening of his art exhibition Dismaland.
