Graphic Organizer on Federalism
Why did Framers choose federalism?
I consider the Framers chose federalism because it's an intermediate form of government. Basically, it's the total opposite from the previous government systems the US had faced. First, the British monarchy that had all the power centralized, and after independence; colonists went for a system that gave all the power to the states leaving the national government with no power. Meanwhile, the nation was struggling because of the Articles of Confederation that were failing and making the government unable to manage the country. Federalism is a system that divided the power and authority between the national government and the state governments to avoid tyranny. It promised more citizen participation in politics, to empower the sovereign individual and protect liberty, free flow of commerce between states, that each state could regulate its own economy and to implement new policies and programs that each state could adapt to its needs. I think Framers were right at choosing federalism because it suited well their demands.
