In Savannah, Georgia, leaders of the black community as well as other leaders, joined together to talk about a future of freedom.
January 12th, 1865: A meeting for freedom
Forty acres and a mule
Soon after the meeting, Sherman issued Special Field Order 15 that gave black families land along the islands and coast of South Carolina and Georgia.
The south became a "free society" with public schools and small towns; america would become "a republic, greater, more populous, free..etc."
Established to build public schools, settle disputes between the white's and the black's and basically help the black community.
Civil Rights Bill
Senator Lyman Trumbull proposed the civil rights bill in early 1866 and it was claimed to be "one of the most important bills ..."
With the reconstruction act came readmitting souther states back into the union
It declared that all persons born in the united states are citizens, this solved so many problems.
Some laws of the reconstruction act consisted of:
- the south being divided into military districts until a constitution was written and approved by congress.
- All males, regardless of race, but excluding former Confederate leaders, were permitted to participate in the constitutional conventions that formed the new governments in each state.
The fourteenth amendment put the principle of citizenship in the constitution for all persons born in the united states. This made the federal government protect all the rights of Americans.
Grant won the election, but with a slim gap, this made many republicans nervous.

Stevens says that the amendment is far from perfect, but he intended to vote for it "because i live among men, not angels"
Rights of women
With equality being the focus, women used this as an opportunity to talk about their rights as a citizen as well. It became present in the press that women did not get paid the same and have limited job opportunities.
Some important republicans decided to make their own party after being alienated in the Grant administration.
The liberals didn't have much to do with reconstruction other than their belief that they were being cast aside in favor for the votes of immigrants.
Hiram Revels was the first African-American senator in American history. Only 5 other have had a seat in the senate since him.
National Economic Depression (begins)
This act outlawed any racial discrimination in public places such as hotels and theaters.
Civil Rights Act
With the North focused on the economy, the South takes a severe blow. People began losing hope in the republicans and the democrats took over the house of representatives for the first time since the civil war.
United States v. Cruikshank
A case about a group of white men killing over a hundred African-American men, the white men claimed that their right to equality had been violated. This case was taken all the way up to the supreme court where they sided with the defendant.
Formed upon the presidency of Hayes, the rules implied that a southerner would be placed in the cabin position of postmaster general as well as that hayes had to work for federal aid to the southern route transcontinental railroad. All the demoocrats had to do to comply was let Hayes be president and respect the civil and political rights of the blacks.
