Alcohol Research Current Reviews (ARCR)
ALCOHOL IS A DEPRESSANT.
AND ADDICTIVE ...
Alcohol's Addictive Properties
"An organism that is chronically exposed to alcohol develops tolerance to its functional (motor-impairing) effects, metabolic effects , and reinforcing properties."
"Once tolerance to the pleasurable effects of alcohol develops, the individual requires gradually higher doses of alcohol to produce the same effect previously experienced at lower doses.”
“During alcohol withdrawal, serotonin release in the nucleus accumbens of rats is suppressed, and this reduction is partially reversed by self-administration of alcohol during withdrawal." (Weiss et al. 1996)
There are some pros though ...
When used in moderation alcohol may lead to reduce the risk of developing heart disease (Mayo Clinic)
May reduce the risk for a clot-caused stroke (Mayo Clinic and Harvard School of Public Health)
Moderate drinking can protect the body in both men and women from cardiovascular diseases (Harvard School of Public Health)
A drink before eating a meal can help with digestion (Harvard School of Public Health)
Can decrease blood pressure
Of course, in order for this to happen, alcohol should be ingested moderately.
