Between the eighth and twelfth days of Dhu al-Hijja (the last month of the Islamic year based on the lunar calendar). It is estimated that Hajj 2016 will fall between September 20 and September 25.
The Stages of Hajj
Pilgrims can begin saving for the Hajj through HSA accounts (Hajj Savings Accounts). These accounts work to both set aside funds for the pilgrimage and also work to plan the trip- including transportation and varying lodging accommodations. Pilgrims must also obtain a visa to enter Mecca and often must have letters written on their behalf.
Pilgrims put on Ihram, declare Niyah (intention of performing Hajj, Tawaf (walk around) the Ka'bah, perform Sa'i (between the hills of Safa and Marwah), and the leave for Mina.
Pilgrims go to Arafat. Here the pilgrims engage in prayer and reflection throughout the day and collect 49 pebbles to use during the next day.
Pilgrims leave Arafat and return to Mina to throw the pebbles at the large Jamratul Aqaba (stone pillars symbolizing Satan). Pilgrims also trim the hair or shave their heads.
The 4th and 5th days are called Ayyamut Tashriq (meaning the days of the drying meat). Pilgrims stay in Mina and perfrom Rami by throwing pebbles at all three Jimar.
Hajj by the numbers
Pilgrims return to Makkah and perform Tawaf Ka'bah again.
