The Emancipation Proclamation was declared on January 1, 1863. It was issued by President Abraham Lincoln.
Through the Proclamation Lincoln stated that all people counted as slaves by the southern states are declared as free.
It allowed for the acceptance of black men into the Navy and Army.
It did not end slavery in the nation.
The Freedman's Bureau
It was established by Congress on March 3, 1865
It was designed to be temporary and only last until one year after the war
It was extremely unsupported.
It was supposed to help former slaves find housing, jobs, and stability
These amendments set, into law, that all men were created equal and should have the same rights as each other
The 13th amendment abolished slavery
The 15th amendment granted all men the right to vote
The 14th amendment granted citizenship to all people
The Black Codes
Laws designed to restrict the freedom of former slaves in the South
One way this was set in place was the creation of sharecropping
The Freedman's Bureau tried to help blacks accommodate to these different codes
Mississippi required that blacks have written evidence of employment
The Ku Klux Klan
It was founded in 1860
It was a secret campaign designed to terrorize black and white Radical Republicans
It was founded by Confederate veterans
Even though Congress tried to stop their progression the Democrats had more victories in the state legislature
