Human Trafficking
Patricia McCormick, the author of Sold, explores the global issue of human trafficking in the subtext. Throughout, the author states how human trafficking and the sex trade is terrible and how its victims are affected horribly.

The Global Issue
The UN.GIFT (United Nations Global Initiative to Fight Human Trafficking) estimates 56% of those trafficked between 2000-2010 were in Asia or the Pacific.
Lakshmi, the main character, was trafficked into India to make money.
Human Trafficking is "The recruitment, transportation, transfer, harboring or receipt of persons, by means of the threat or use of force or other forms of coercion, of abduction, of fraud, of deception, of the abuse of power or of a position of vulnerability or of the giving or receiving of payments or benefits to achieve the consent of a person having control over another person, for the purpose of exploitation." (Convention against Transnational Organized Crime and the Protocols Thereto 2004, p. 42).
The United Nations estimated that:

The average age of a trafficking victim is 18-24 years old. The main character of our book, Lakshmi, was only 13/14 years old.
Sold
The book, Sold, is a story about a young girl sold into the Indian sex trade. Lakshmi was taken by her Step Father to be a maid in the city. When they arrived, she had been tricked. Lakshmi was stolen and her captors forced her into prostitution.
Conflicts
Throughout the book, you can see the affects of human trafficking on Lakshmi:
“Victims are often seeking to leave a desperately poor area for one with better opportunities. Traffickers exploit this desire, targeting economically or emotionally vulnerable populations” (Human Trafficking, Gale). Lakshmi’s family was economically unstable which lead her to seek a job as a maid in the city. Her abductors tricked her; when she came in to start work, she was stolen.
Sex trafficking isn’t the only form of human trafficking that exists. “Labor traffickers force victims to work against their will in… the restaurant industry, farming, manufacturing, construction, and domestic work” (Human Trafficking). So, human trafficking is just the process in which criminals abduct people against their will and place them into some marketplace.
