Set in the 90s but all possessions detective has are ancient. Show's that he is very traditional.
Convention- can't see dead person's face, has no identity, just an object in a typical detective thriller. The relationship between Brad and Morgan is very conventional, good cop/bad cop.
He's owns a black cat ornament, which sits on his shelf. May suggest he is very superstitious; prone to bad luck.
There's the repetition of 7 a lot. This links back to the title of the film. May also refer to the seven deadly sins.
High pitch noise is discordant and uncomfortable/ unsettling. Sounds like screeching as though someone's being tortured or crying out in protest.
Rain- reflects the mood of the murder, dreary and miserable, emphasises death.
Sirens- portrays danger, unsettlement of city and lack of security.
At the end of the opening sequence, the words "closer to God" are muttered. Makes reference towards death, which is quite comical in a thriller where death is a usual occurrence.
The ticking of the metronome sounds almost like a heartbeat. It ends on the 7th tick, referring back to the title. The ticking could be counting down to the end of his life(very old).
Fade in at the start could be interpreted that he's opening his eyes because it starts in the morning.
Superimposed titles are used to make the opening disorientated and seem out of the ordinary for the viewer(which is everyday life).
Writing slanted and scratchy as though it's been handwritten e.g. like a ransom note.
day shrunk displays that his life is just made up of work and is a never ending cycle of the same routine.
match on action is demonstrated when the old detective is picking up his items for the day. Indicates that his life is very organised like a routine. Could be deeply annotated to seem like he has a short time left to live.
Close up of items hints towards Morgan's job in the opening. Job is common for a horror.
low angle shot of conversation- shows power of their job. The power swaps constantly between the two. Angle is like they're being watched.
Slow pan of them walking down the street, the young cop gets bumped into many times, where as the older one doesn't. This implies that the younger has something to learn from the older because he is only with the job and does not yet have the knowledge.
