The Atom Model
~fifth century B.C. 1
Believed all matter consists of small particles
Believed all matter consists of smaller particles. Gathered evidence by measuring the masses of elements that combine when compounds are formed.
Thomson used a sealed tube of gas and ranelectrical current through the tube. Placing +/-disks by it to see the charge. His experiment provided evidence that atoms aremade up of even smaller particles.
Rutherford’s model showed that all of the atom’s positive charge is concentrated in its nucleus.
His experiment concluded that particles he produced were neutral because a Charged object did not deflect their paths.
He took the model a step further by using mathematical equations, to describe the finding of an electron in a certain position
He figured out that electrons move with a constant speed in fixed orbits around the nucleus.
