It seems like a long time since our February update and Covid 19 has brought about many changes and much uncertainty. Despite this, there have been numerous things that have made us smile in the midst of our questions and concerns:
- The amazing spirit of our staff who have dug in and offered to help in any manner they can;
- The obvious care shown for one another and for our students and families, evident in the variety of questions which ultimately come down to ‘how are our students doing’;
- The innovative ways that staff have reached out to let students and families know that they are missed and the ways that students and families reached back:
- A warm smile, a kind word, an ‘I miss you’ message;
- Videos which make you laugh and want to sing/dance along;
- Virtual spirit week challenges; and,
- Student led messages and videos.
These are just a few of the many demonstrations of the power of caring relationships. I would like to thank everyone for their ongoing support as we forge new paths together.
We know students are concerned about how school closures will effect their learning. Teachers and central office staff have been working together with colleagues and partners from across the province, as well as those at the NS Department of Education and Early Childhood Development, to create plans for teachers to use as they support student learning at home. Materials, such as the learning packages for grades P-9, are being developed every two weeks and will go out in the weekly flyers to homes across the province. (click for Saltwire) The Department of Education and Early Childhood Development's curriculum site contains many resources for all grade levels, as well as links to information for both teachers and parents. (view site here) At the local school level, teachers have been working on strategies to connect and work with students. These strategies will be adapted as we work together to determine what works best.
We are all learning together and trying a variety of approaches in this new reality of remote learning. Together, we’ve got this! I'd like to take this opportunity to thank parents and caregivers for all they are doing in difficult circumstances. Finally, please remember to follow the health guidelines.(view guidelines here) Practice social distancing, proper hand washing and, if possible, get outside for some fresh air and exercise. Protect yourself and others by staying home and staying well.
Take good care,
.Susan Kelley
