The music preferences of these individuals is fairly diverse, but pop was the most commonly selected response across all ages within our target audience (73.9%). Other popular genres included rock (59.2%) country (50.7%) and alternative (47.2%). While this is useful information to have, it does not provide useful insights on its surface.
We separately analyzed this data by calculating the relative frequency of responses within our two target generations. Doing so revealed that music preferences for some genres differed significantly between Generation X and Millennials.
Pop remained the most popular in both groups, while other top reported genres were not favored equally when age was taken into consideration. Rock appears to be more popular among Gen X whereas significantly more Millennials would prefer to listen to alternative music.
Parents were additionally asked what genres of music they were uncomfortable with their children listening to. Given the importance of keeping this event family friendly, this data is included to give a more complete demographic comparison. However, these opinions may not be representative of the population due to low response rates for this question.
