On New Years Day, also known as Yom Kippur The day of atonement, Jewish prisoners pray. While praying, Eliezer gets angry at Him. He was angry because God had allowed the Jews to suffer. This was the day the Jewish began fasting. Eliezer ate anyway both because his father told him to and he wanted to revolt.
Eliezer finds out that this was a day for selection. When it was Eliezer turn he ran as fast as he could and was happy when his friends told him that his number was not written down.
The next day, Eliezer is moved to a different Kommando. There he meets a few veterans who tell him that he is lucky to be there and that he should not be afraid.
After Eliezer's turn n the selection, he meets up with his father who says he passed. Later they found out when the Blockalteste called out numbers Eliezer's father's number had been written down without him noticing. Before his father leaves for the next selection he gives Eliezer a knife and a spoon because he believed he would not see his son again but he does pass the second selection
In the infirmary, Eliezer meets a 'faceless' man, a Hungarian Jew who tells him that there is a selection in the infirmary too. Eliezer gets his foot operated on, the doctor tells him that he will need to rest for two weeks in order to walk normally again.
It is now winter in the middle of January and Eliezer's right foot is hurting, when he goes to the infirmary he finds out that his foot has swelled with puss.
Rumors spread that the Russians, Red Army was invading. When it was time to evacuate, Eliezer decided to leave with his father rather than stay in the infirmary. As the prisoners were leaving, the Blockalteste ordered them to mop the floor of the block.
