Bede Gaming Ltd
2015 - 2018
At Bede my primary role was front end / JS developer, responsible for theming our clients’ gambling websites. Typically this meant either on-boarding existing sites into our platform, or the development of new features to requirements, while liaising with our product owners and delivery teams to ensure work is released on time to clients.
I benefitted from learning agile/scrum development practices and a diverse software stack, giving me invaluable exposure to new tools and technologies. To name a few – Backbone/Marionette, Orchard CMS (.NET MVC), git, JIRA, Slack, Gulp, Grunt, Node.js, NPM, TeamCity, Octopus Deploy.
Web Developer / Designer
Vertu Motors PLC
At Vertu Motors I worked as one of two front-end developers responsible for over 14 group brand and e-commerce websites. Reporting to the Internet Development Manager, my primary duties included the maintenance and on-going front-end development of existing and new sites, leveraging the in-house CMS, to ensure a sector-leading end user experience. This also encompassed some design work when prototyping new ideas.
The business utilised many bespoke, internally developed, web-delivered systems, which I was also heavily involved in creating. For instance, I was appointed the sole front-end developer for an innovative tablet-based showroom system. This represented an industry first for the motor trade, and my responsibilities covered the initial design all the way to providing support on initial rollout.
The group’s websites generate millions of page views each month, which allowed me to acquire a good sense of the importance software development process in business-critical environments. From liaising with the server-side team and other company departments to presenting work to company directors and our end users to bug fixing, I was able to experience the full software development lifecycle.
I moved on in summer 2015 as I wanted to work in a more progressive environment that embraced newer technologies.
Newcastle City Learning Centre
I worked as a volunteer tutor helping children aged 8-12 develop basic to advanced computer literacy skills in word processing, video editing and photo editing etc. with both Windows and Mac platforms. This was a very challenging but rewarding experience that allowed me to witness first hand the responsibilities of user experience and interaction design.
