Who is Shirley Chishlom?
Born: November 30, 1924, New York City, NY
Shirley Chishlom has paved paths for both African Americans and women. She has helped with equality with rich and poor, white and black. She has promoted healthcare for all, equal rights. Lots of what she said in her quotes are relevant to today's society.
From 1969 to 1982, Shirley Chishlom served in The House of Representatives. Chishlom was involved in multiple committees including Agriculture, Veterans' Affairs, Rules and Education, and Labor. In 1972, Shirley Chishlom decided to be the first African American woman to run for president, but she wasn't successful at gaining the title due to gender and racial inequality. She seen herself as a "double handicap" because of the color of her skin and her gender. Back then, it wasn't thought of as "right" for a woman to run the country and people didn't want to sake of their life to be in the hands of a woman. Chishlom wanted to break the stereotypical roles in the world. Statistically, men ruled the world and Chishlom wanted to change it.
In the 1960's, Chishlom had joined the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People, also known as NAACP. In 1968, she became the first African American woman to be elected to the United States Congress.
1977 became the first black woman and second woman ever to serve on the powerful House Rules Committee. The House Rules Committee considers all bills reported from policy and fiscal committees and determines whether, and in what order, to schedule their consideration on the floor of the House.
Chishlom fought for everyone to be treated as a equal. She wanted unity between races and genders.
Chishlom was known for some of her thought provoking quotes.
Here are a couple examples:
“I am not the candidate of Black America, although I am Black and proud. I am not the candidate of the woman’s movement of this country, although I am a woman and I am equally proud of that.”
" When morality comes up against profit, it is seldom that profit loses"
“If they don't give you a seat at the table, bring a folding chair.”
"Racism is so universal in this country, so widespread and deep-seated that is it invisible because it is so normal
"Unbossed and Unbought"
