US dollar plunges:1978 President Carter dropped the value of the US dollar. It began to fall when other countries currencies started to increase value. The dollars worth was dropping so quickly that it was jeopardizing the government's anti-inflation effort(the goal to keep prices on things low). This decision heavily affected the economy. It made borrowing money more expensive and it denies credit to smaller businesses, which limits expansion and new investment.
July 13-14th, 1977, New York City had electricity blackout, it affected most of New York City. The 1977 blackout resulted in disorder and arson. The 25 hour outage began around 9:30 p.m. on July 13th, after a bolt of lightning struck an electrical substation. Which led to an economic decline coupled with rising crime rates.
Greensboro Massacre:1979"The Greensboro massacre occurred on November 3, 1979 in Greensboro, North Carolina, United States. Five protest marchers were shot and killed by members of the Ku Klux Klan and the American Nazi Party. The protest was the culmination of attempts by the Communist Workers Party to organize mostly black industrial workers in the area."
As a result the KKK and the greensboro police department were forced to pay $350,000 in damages.
Iran hostage crisis: 1979 Fifty-two American citizens were held captive in Iran for 444 days. A large group of around 400 Iranian students were the ones who captured them. They captured them because the US and Iran were not on the best terms and they wanted to do something malicious. It was on November 4, 1979. An effect of this is that it changed the way the US interacts with foreign affairs and the Middle East. Since the occurrence the US makes sure to be more careful on which countries they interact with.
