The Middle East is made of almost 20 countries, with many different types of religions and a variety of ethnic groups. Judaism, Christianity, and Islam were made in the Middle East. Mixing with the first people of the region, they produced the peoples that make up the Middle East today. Islam, the religion of the Muslims, is the most popular religion of the Middle East. But Judaism is the oldest surviving monotheistic religion, or the belief that there is only one god. Today, no more than 10 percent of the people of Middle East region follows the nomadic way of life, or the always traveling way of life.
The range of language is high with people speaking Arabic, Hebrew, Aramaic, Kurdish, Persian, Armenian, Turkish, Azeri. They still don’t have running water, sending their kids to a well each day. Aside from language and water, religion plays a major role in their life. It even determines the end of their work week. Shops are closed on Friday, for Muslim holy day, Saturdays, for the Jewish Sabbath, and Sunday for the christian day of rest. So, a lot of Saudi Arabia’s life is based off of religion.
At one time most of the middle East's people inhabited small villages or little towns, living and working much as their predecessors had done for centuries. Sons have always been a source of pride in the Arab world and are associated with money, honor and power. Past generations preferred to have male children, as parents were afraid that a girl might dishonor herself and possibly their family. If you dishonor your family that is a very bad thing. Many wars take place among tribes for food, water, and land, among other reasons. This is why males are important because they can fight in these wars. The way males are usually named are after their grandfathers to keep the name of the family’s ancestors alive for future generations. When woman have children, family members only read verses of the Holy Qur’an, a type of Bible type item, and only eat desserts and sweets such as caraway, knafeh, and chocolate distributed at a festive party gathering a week after the birth of the child. Special drinks with flavorings like cinnamon are served along with coffee and sodas. Friends and family come with gifts such as clothes and toys for the baby, or clothing for the mother. One bad thing about being a women is women aren't allowed to make major decisions without the consent of the male figure.
Way of Life
Middle east marriages are arranged by parents but the child does have a right to reject any possible suitors. For a girl the parents start to find suitable partners as early as age 10 but they actual marriage doesn’t happen until they are about 15 or 16 years old. It is a very common practice to have an arranged marriage with your cousin. At the afternoon celebration men and women are separated into 2 rooms (it is customary to have men and women separated at social events). Then the guests are served a traditional meal of Kababs (meat on skewers), nan (flat oval shaped bread), subzi (cooked vegetables), and pilau (rice and meat cooked together). After the guests have finished eating the host are allowed to start.
Education in the middle east is very similar to what we have today but also very different. They are taught most of the same subjects like language arts, math, and science. But they consider themselves lucky if they are able to attend school unlike most of us who would rather stay in bed. In Iraq children go to school from 1st to 6th grade before taking a test that determines if they can continue going to school. If they pass girls and boys will be separated from then on. In afghanistan most people who attend school are boys though there are some girls. They take the same classes except home management which is an extra class the girls take. In pakistan few girls go to school because of the taliban and traditional families discouraging their daughters from going.
The geography of Saudi Arabia is mostly deserts and mountains. The main desert is the Arabian Desert and the others are part of that desert. Such as the Syrian and the Nafud Desert. There are lots of mountain ranges too like Caucasus Mountains and Elburz Mountains. The Nafud desert is famous for its sand dunes. Some even reach 100ft. tall! The Arabian Desert is one of the largest in the planet with an area of 900,000 sq. mi. !
Effects of the War
The middle east isn't the most luxurious area, almost entirely because of the wars. 15 years later, Dean Obeidallah wrote on Huffington Post, people were still affected. There was an absurd amount of military, and they were always on guard.
The lasting impact
Many people (around 5 million, to be exact) of the middle east were forced into refugee camps due to the damage of the war. The “houses” were unpleasant, to say the least, and the government provided no assistance. They had little to no food, and children were seriously troubled.
